We've been going to Mextizo since they opened earlier this summer and have found it to be the best Mexican dining experience in Cedar Rapids. The service is very courteous and quick. The servers all wear in-house T-shirts with edgy sayings about tacos and margaritas. Clever! Always with a smile. Beautifully executed artist murals adorn the walls and pretty hanging greenery has been styled to look as if you are in a courtyard arbor.
The food is the star here. All very well prepared from an extensive menu. High-quality ingredients are used and are put together with the touch of a caring chef. So far, nothing we have had has been mediocre or carelessly prepared. The pineapple chicken (requested without the cheese) The Caldo de Res was deliciously close to being just like Mom made. I had the summery experience of a very fresh and well-made seviche on the comfortable patio on a hot day. They even provided unique scooping chips with the seviche that tasted as close to homemade as I have ever had at a North American restaurant. The tacos Campechanos continue to be a repeated favorite with my spouse who loves the chorizo, carnitas, and Carne asada individual tacos on a mixed plate with rice and beans. We look forward to returning again and again as a staple of dining out and good times.
One note: I give the atmosphere 4 stars because there is the mildly distracting aspect of the entry way that smells strongly of disinfectant. While I understand the need for cleanliness, it is not the best first impression when it could smell like either the delicious food from within or something else enticing like limes or the scent of Abuelita
chocolate or the like. Additionally, the music is very loud and difficult to converse over. While my spouse and i dont mind not speaking much over a meal, it might be best for Super loud to be reserved for happy hour and Friday/Saturday evenings.

EXCELLENT!!! "Mextizo" is a mix of the Spanish words for "mixed" and Mexico, and it makes sense: Do yourself a favor and try what is a fun mix of the authentic and the creative here at Mextizo. Cedar Rapids has what might be referred to as an overabundance of Mexican restaurants, but this one stands out. Service was attentive and effective. HUGE menu.
My enchiladas mixtas had four types of chicken-based enchiladas in everything from cheese to an adobe-colored sauce which was somewhere between mole and cinnamon flavored, savory and not sweet. Nice, and authentic for sure when compared to what I've had points south of Mexico City.
I took a convincingly steamy, smoky video of mom's beef fajitas and will try to find a way to upload it later. Trust me, she's picky there and they delivered tender beefiness to satisfy.
House-made corn tortillas are available in addition to more familiar flour ones. My wife's jalapeno margarita dusted with spicy and tart Tajin had fresh jalapeno peppers and was a fun, if not wholly authentic addition. The margaritas are oddly crystal clear, but don't taste artificial, so order with confidence. They're huge and strong, so go slow!

You have to try this place. The chips are great and I can’t get away from the carnitas. It’s enough for 2 meals for me. The fresh salad with it is so good. Even the rice is good and I normally don’t even touch the rice.

A large menu. Good food (wont say exceptional or anything). Reasonable prices. Small but noticeable vegetarian/vegan options. Service and atmosphere is very good.

You walk into this restaurant and it smells clean and has beautiful decor.
As we were sitting and observing the staff hussle to take care of the customers you can't help but laugh at someone's great sense of humor. Each staff member has on a unique shirt with some great sayings on the back.
They have plenty of seating including a second room for larger groups.
The chips taste like no other. They taste fresh and made in house not like store bought. The salsa is excellent it is not a run of the mill salsa it has a slit kick to it.
I had a chicken street quesadilla it was crispy, hot and filled with yummy goodness. Chicken, cheese, lettuce and topped with cotija. Also very filling.
My husband had a burrito tacuba. Filled with spiced ribeye steak meat, beans and rice. First bite he did a yummy grown. If that doesn't say it all. It was large and they do not scrimp on the filling or toppings.
He said we will differently be coming back here again.

One of the worst dining experiences I've ever had. This happened Friday, July 5th, 2024 from around 4:36pm to 5:49pm.
I told the waitress I wanted a burrito with JUST beans, cheese, lettuce and rice. The waitress took my order, then came back to make sure I didn't want meat in my burrito, and I said "No, I'm a vegetarian." and she acknowledged she heard me and left.
When my burrito comes, there are a bunch of fajitas in it. I explained how I didn't ask for fajitas, I just wanted JUST beans, cheese, lettuce, and rice in my burrito. She apologized and said she accidently typed in a "veggie burrito" in the system and it comes with fajitas in it. No problem, it was an honest mistake. I'm not going to be mad. She brought out the manager and I explained the situation and how I wanted JUST beans, cheese, lettuce, and rice and they would get my correct order in.
After waiting for 5-15 minutes, they bring another burrito out and I can already see fajitas spilling out of this new burrito. At this point I'm upset, because I told the waitress at least 2 times and the manager once what I wanted. The waitress said that she didn't put in the order and that she had made sure the MANAGER put in the order to make sure it's right. And it was wrong. I explained for the 3rd time to the waitress that I wanted a burrito with JUST beans, cheese, lettuce and rice and how I don't have enough time to eat and that I need to go.
They insisted on making it right and asked if they could make me a burrito to go. I obliged. I appreciated the offer. We wait another 5-10 minutes and they bring me a burrito out in a container. I was about to leave, but something told me I should check the burrito before I go. I slice open the burrito and see WHITE rice, BLACK beans, and rubbery white cheese. I'm so upset I'm holding back tears at this point.
The first 2 burritos came with Mexican rice, refried beans, and normal dairy cheese. I asked them if this was vegan cheese and they said yes. I told them I never once said I wanted vegan cheese and they said something along the lines of "We just wanted to make sure you could eat it," or "We wanted to make sure it was right." My mom was so upset she refused to pay, which never happens.
We always try to give restaurants a fair chance and I understand mistakes happen and that it's stressful working in the service industry, but after the last burrito came out with white rice, black beans, and vegan cheese, I just felt insulted. I never ONCE said I had a problem with the Mexican rice, refried beans, or dairy cheese. I told the waitress from the beginning I was a vegetarian and she heard me. All I said was I wanted a burrito with JUST beans, cheese, lettuce and rice. Like I said the first 3 times.
Everyone at the restaurant was polite, but messing up 3 times when I said from the beginning what I wanted was really upsetting. I felt like nobody was listening to me and what I wanted. And I really wanted to like this place. It was very clean and had good reviews. Even when I was leaving the waitress apologized again and said she hope we would come back. But at this point I was so upset I was crying.
I'm not saying to avoid this place, but I had a horrible experience.
