Quiet for the Lunch time on the holiday (Columbus Day). My brother and I love this place. Had my ONE tenderloin while in Iowa here. Waitress was great and a hard worker.

I love trying new foods and this was great. A great downtown pub that was packed. We had to wait for a table to be cleared. It is clearly loved by many. It has many different beers on tap though we did not partake. I was starving so we forgot to take photos... But we had the schnitzel chicken finger basket and German style meatloaf. The chicken was hand breaded but fries weren't homemade. My husband loved the meatloaf and finished the plate. Now dessert was my favorite. Warm apple crisp and a huge slice of German chocolate cake. Both amazing. The wait staff took a little long to return to our table to take our order which was frustrating... Restroom were in okay condition considering the number of patrons in the establishment and time of day. Parking was free in their parking lot if you could find space or the free after hours parkade nextdoor. Atmosphere is festive lively and fun.

Meats are great, but others are way too sour for us. Overall expensive.

It's a noisy bar environment. After serving in Germany with the US Army, I know good German food when I taste it and this place doesn't cut it. Since I never got anything good, I went for the fish and chips and that was a soggy mess. I'll not be back.

The server told me the brats were not made in house and actually just Johnsonville. So I ordered two
A German spot with a cozy vibe and rustic decor.
The draft beer selection is a bit limited, but the 10 options they offer definitely won’t disappoint beer lovers. You can get them in half or full liter glasses... and don’t miss the famous boot for sharing (check out my photos to see the huge size of that glass!).
The menu is packed with traditional German dishes: schnitzels, bratwursts, and pretzels, all served in generous portions. There are also a few veggie options available.
Service is quick, and the staff is super attentive and knowledgeable.
They’ve got a great outdoor area too, perfect for enjoying good food and beer on a nice spring or summer day. It’s an ideal spot whether you’re hanging out with friends or enjoying a meal with family.
In short, Hessen Haus is a must-visit in Des Moines if you love good food, German beer, and a welcoming atmosphere—both inside and out.
I’ll definitely be back!

Great atmosphere and amazing menu! Really had to make some tough decisions when it came to ordering. Ended up getting the Schweinshax, Sauerbraten, jumbo pretzel and the apple crisp. The quality of food and presentation was great, but the flavor was a little underwhelming. Would definitely recommend this place to meet up and have a beer or two.
