Caroline's Restaurant Reviews
Excellent food at a very reasonable price. We had dinner here twice and breakfast while staying at the hotel and every dish has been exceptional.
My wife and I had a short trip to Dubuque last week and stayed at the Hotel Julien. We opted to treat ourselves to dinner at Caroline's our last night in town, and I'm so glad we did. I got the Scottish salmon filet with risotto and green beans, and my wife got the chicken and sausage penne.
Now, let me tell you, the food was truly phenomenal. I'd give everything an all-around 9.8/10 - the only "issue" we had with anything was that the pasta was the slightest bit overcooked...read full review
Absolutely horrible food. Illiterate chefs. Poor customer service. Tried to blame the over boiled mushy cauliflower on the paper container steaming it. I would eat dumpster food before eating here! Cauliflower would be great for seniors with no teeth.

Caroline's Restaurant provides a pleasant dining experience with good food and attentive service. The menu includes local Verena Street coffee, biscuits and gravy, and a popular white bean chicken chili. The food is generally enjoyable, with standout dishes such as the Scottish salmon filet with risotto and green beans, and chicken and sausage penne. The white bean chicken chili has impressed many customers with its rich, creamy, spicy, and lime flavors, making it a dish that diners often wish to replicate at home. The coffee is often described as divine, although coffee flights have been inconsistent at times, with some arriving cold.
The restaurant itself is very comfortable and inviting, creating a cozy atmosphere that makes guests feel at home and at ease. Customers appreciate the calm environment, free from hustle and bustle, screaming kids, or noise under tables. Service can sometimes be a bit slow, but there are moments when the staff truly shines. One server, Holly, was particularly helpful, knowledgeable, attentive, prompt, and friendly, adding to the positive experience. The food, including eggs Benedict, chorizo omelette, veggie omelette, and zucchini quinoa bowl, is often praised for its quality and generous portions. The cappuccinos brewed by Caroline's superb barista are especially recommended and are considered over-the-top delicious. Overall, Caroline's Restaurant remains a charming spot for gracious dining in a lovely old hotel, perfect for small groups, family gatherings, or intimate meals.
