Let me tell you about Uncle sun, everything on the menu is absolutely delicious. Even things that I usually do not like have surprised me with how great they are prepared. I don't know who they have in that kitchen but they are not paid enough. My only issue with the restaurant is that it's not the fastest service and the dining room is a little messy. Not dirty but cluttered. Other than that I have zero complaints. The food is fantastic the staff is kind and very welcoming. They always make me feel like home even when I show up with a a 13-person party with no reservation. I will be there all the time. I absolutely love this place and it's so awesome to go to after a long night at the bar with my friends

They have the best crab rangoons hands down!
**It’s been 3 years since my original review, and I can confidently say they still have the best crab rangoons I’ve ever had in both Iowa and Illinois.

Uncle sun just took my change and never gave it back. Would've tipped more if I got my change back
Went there for the first time and the food was great, the staff and service were excellent. We’ve been disappointed with many Chinese restaurants in the area lately but this place will be our “go to” whenever we’re in downtown Iowa City.
Highly recommended.
I'm never a fan of coming here because it always is so slow in getting the order.

This food is totally different from what's on the menu…… I'm totally shocked!

Glad to see their star rating has gone up - have never had bad food here. Chili wontons and mapo tofu are 10/10 (only place in town where I've been able to get actual authentic mapo tofu with szechuan peppercorn).

I ordered orange chicken and grilled squid. The amount of food was large for the price and I was very satisfied. The only regret is that I didn't expect the grilled squid to be a squid skewer. It didn't matter because I like Chinese spices, but if I had known it was a skewer, I would have ordered lamb skewers.

Restaurantji Recommends
Uncle Sun has great garlic with eggplant. They'll make your entrees spicy if you want. The portions are large, so you can be frugal with the leftovers. Anytime I've eaten in the restraunt the service has been great. Thanks for being great Uncle Sun :)

Me and my boyfriend frequent Uncle Sun. He is from China and I am White, we both love it here. They have some amazing traditional dishes and some comfort american chinese dishes. If you like spicy soup get number 200. Please tip, the waiters and waitresses are all so kind and hardworking. If you don't like something, try something else, they have like 400 dishes on their menu.

When i arrived at the restaurant, I noticed the worker placing plates/bowls on a table ignoring i even enter the establishment. A few minutes after she finished setting up the table she asked me what I would like to order, I told her I would need to look at the menu a little longer since it was my first time eating there she says okay. Not even 5 minutes later a dasher comes in for an order and she tells him it not ready 5 min. Goes into the kitchen and does whatever she did. While shes in the kitchen 3 customers come in one carrying a 6 pack of beer and opens one. They all sit down at the table she placed the plates/bowls at, she then comes out of the kitchen not with any doordash orders. She has food in her hands and places it on the table where the 3 customers are sitting. I think they are family because no establishment will allow you to bring alcohol into their place because they usually sell it themselves. And she talked to them like she knew them. After that she walked into the kitchen and grab doordash orders complete ignoring me when I wanted to order. I placed my order, I got the sweet and sour chicken with white rice. I honestly don't recommend the sweet and sour chicken. It mostly fried batter around a small piece of chicken. The rice was okay. Honestly I would rather go to a store and get a frozen entrée of sweet and sour chicken over ordering from here again. I think they should retrain their employees on how to be professional and not allow outside food or drink into their place of business and make sure they are attending to their customers before their family. Especially if someone already pays for their order.
