The room was clean. Beds were so so, pillows were good, shower was good. Breakfast was a joke. We left and went to McDonald's instead. The new owners shut the restaurant down, which was stupid, as they used to have a great breakfast. Didn't go to the bar. We stayed 10 years ago and it was 5 star then. These new owners ruined it, sadly.

The rooms are very clean and nice. I loved all the antiques around the lobby. The hotel is not handicapped accessible and there's no one around to ask for help getting bags up the stairs. I couldn't find a usb port anywhere to charge my phone. This was my first time at a b&b so maybe my expectations were too high for breakfast. The first day the choices were microwave sausage biscuits, yogurt, frosted flakes, fruit loops, bananas, chocolate chip granola bars, and hard boiled eggs. They didn't restock the breakfast room for the next day, so no hot breakfast (all the sausage biscuits had been eaten the previous day) and there were still empty/dirty milk pitchers sitting in the same place as the day before. I wasn't impressed, but the rooms were very nice.

Great historic feel to the building, beautiful woodwork that you just don’t see in places under $100/night usually. Still use old school metal keys on a key ring, I like that. Our room was clean, comfortable, the window opened, parking was easy and free on the Main Street.New ownership in the recent past, we were told by the locals drinking at the bar. Staff is from west India, they have a good thing going, hopefully they can keep this historic building and business alive!Ps restaurant is closed currently but the bar is serving frozen pizzas and the similar modest bar foods. Bar was open from 5p on Fri sat sun onlyFood & drinks: Bar was open downstairs with reasonable prices and karaoke (Friday nights until 1030p)

Fifth owner in 6 years. Restaurant is now closed. Rooms are expensive for what's offered. Very clicky. No

This hotel is quaint. Our room was small but very clean. It reminds me of a bed and breakfast, although the breakfast is very limited. The owner is really nice and even put a small refrigerator in our room for us. I like that it has a very rustic charm.Walkability: In the heart of downtown Maquoketa.

There is no restaurant or bar. The breakfast was just granola bars, bananas, cereal and yogurt. But it is a very cool old building.

We love this hotel. Dog friendly, nice cushioned carpets, quiet, helpful and friendly staff. My main critiques would be that we only initially had one set of towels even though I booked the room for 3 people, we didn't have a spare roll of toilet paper, so I had to go ask for another, one tube of soap isn't enough for 3 people to shower and wash hands for 3 nights (a bar of soap would have been nice), and while it was super nice to have breakfast delivered to the room each morning, it was only enough for 1 person and we had 3 people in the room. We will definitely be returning because there's so much we like - walk ability downtown is fantastic, it's close to a park and the fairgrounds, and the staff is super friendly and helpful (one helped me carry my bags up the stairs on the one night the elevator was out of service --much appreciated!!).Rooms: Comfortable rooms, quiet, cushioned carpeted floors.Nearby activities: Bakery, liquor store, and brewery within 1 block of the hotel! Fairgrounds a short drive or a decent walk away.Safety: Double locks on the bedroom doors. Front desk always staffed. Small town safe.Walkability: Hotel is right downtown, so it's super easy to walk and shop all of the downtown and get back to the hotel without having to drive.Food & drinks: Restaurant was closed for renovation, but the Maquoketa cave bar was open Saturday night. It's pretty cool down there. Lots of drink options (canned drinks, hard spirits, and cocktail options). We got our ice for our room filled down here too. :)Noteworthy details: This hotel has a really neat historic feel to it. It is very welcoming and quiet.

Made our reservation under the assumption that their restaurant actually existed, it doesn’t. The pictures on the web page show a very nice restaurant with a great menu. It doesn’t exist. Our room was supposed to have have a queen sized bed, but it was full sized in actuality. When leaving in the morning I was surprised to find a bag meal on the floor outside the door consisting of a frozen egg sandwich, very small yogurt, a bar, and a banana with a napkin and spoon for two people. I appreciated the gesture, but found it comical. The one saving grace is that the historical aspect of the building was quite fascinating. The bathroom was very small with literally no counter space. There were no hand towels. The hot water knob in the shower did not work properly. I ended up doing a dance in the shower after showering because I could not get the hot water to turn off. Almost burned my feet. Stopped at the desk to let them know, but there was nobody there. The history of the building was great, the rest if the experience was very poor.

Interesting historical building, but the room itself was more like a normal modern hotel room. Clean and adequate, no weird smells or mysteries (although the place is almost certainly haunted). Didn’t get to try the restaurant or lounge at all—they have strange and inscrutable hours of operation(?).

We definitely enjoyed our visit here. The gentleman checking us in was very nice and professional. He even hand delivered water and cups to our room. The rooms were very nice, clean and neat. I loved the orginial grand staircase and all of the newspaper clippings detailing the history of the hotel attached to the checkin counter. Woke up this morning and they even left a paper bag full of goodies for us to take on the road. If you are looking to stay in a quaint historical hotel in a small town this would be the place.❤

The rooms were very clean and very unique. The beds & pillows were extremely comfortable which is what we needed ? The new owner, Mike, was friendly, kind, and very willing to make us happy. Mike had only owned the hotel for 3 days when we arrived and was doing most of the room preparation work himself. The hotel has great history (on display) and the bar in the basement is amazing! I highly recommend the Decker Hotel if you would like a unique boutique hotel experience.

What a great inspiration, after years of driving through Maquoketa to get home before sundown, we decided it was time to stay. And we were rewarded. With a spectacular building basically untouched—except for adding the mod cons—since 1873. High ceilings, beautiful woodwork, architectural splendor and all. Our room was understated luxury and was a pleasant retreat after a dusty day on the prairie and road. Enjoyed a light supper in the Maquoketa Cave restaurant/bar downstairs, with local wine. And slept like an infant in the sumptuous king size bed. Unobtrusive service but the owners leave nothing to chance. We’ll be back.
