It used to be good, but now it has declined, and they no longer have some items from the menu. The menu is available online, which could be difficult for older people like my grandmother — she would've turned 93 on September 30. Growing up, she didn't have internet, and calling your place a '1950s restaurant' isn't accurate anymore.
I am patient. I have worked in the restaurant industry. I understand being short staffed and busy, I understand all of it. It does not excuse the fact that when you go in with a family and there is no one else in the restaurant and they act like you coming in is an inconvenience and stops them from wrapping silverware. Hidden gem! We stopped here on our way back to Des Moines, and we WILL return! Love a good 50s vibe place and this had it + good, hot food and great service.

Penny's Diner offers a variety of meals, with the Chicken Fried Steak being a highlight. This old-time diner serves breakfast all day and is an excellent choice for a quick meal. The triple decker club and Ruben sandwich are excellent and loaded with meat, while the burgers with tater tots are well prepared. Everything is cooked to order. The friendly and pleasant staff is very efficient, though the service could sometimes be better when they are short-handed. The diner uses a digital menu and could benefit from improved cleanliness and management.
