Monterrey Express Mexican Kitchen

Me and my partner went to grab lunch at this place and both of us got sick . It was the first meal of the day . When we got home from the restaurant we start feeling sick and running to the bathroom. I guess this was my first time getting food poisoning here in Des Moines area . The weird fact is : we did a review before and just disappeared! I had the carnitas and farrita burritos. SHAME!

We both got ill (intestinal symptoms) after eating here on 10/15/25. Food tasted ok, but something is off at this place. Previous review deleted, which makes me question this place even more. Be warned.

Meh - the first time I tried this place I was not impressed but loved the drive through option. The guac was damn near frozen which I didn’t expect. I decided to not leave feedback the first time (2 months ago) and give them another shot this evening and sad to say I’m still not impressed. The chips are always stale and unflavorful. The chicken was bland and the lettuce was soggy and didn’t taste right, looked brown- certainly not fresh by any means. I think since they have the drive through they have several things premade and frozen to have easily ready and that’s the problem. The chips in the paper bags were so greasy as if they had been sitting in the bag for the last week I had to put it in a container. Nothing is fresh. I don’t foresee a need to go back which makes me sad. I had high hopes.

I went through the drive-thru at Monterrey Express and wow… the food was amazing! I tried the churros (so good!) and for the tacos my favorites were definitely the pastor and asada. The spicy salsa hit just right too. I’m being super honest when I say this—coming from a Mexican girlie, this place is worth it!

Fantastic street tacos, seafood nachos are terrific as well. Great pricing for the food you get. Drive here from Urbandale, and it’s worth the trip.

We had a GREAT experience!! We ordered catering for an event and the employees brought all the food out to the truck since my baby was sleeping in the car. They packed things well and it was delicious! Thank you!!!

Chips and salsa are very good, but that’s the best thing in my order. It was last time too. At least they are consistent. Last time I got a chimichanga and I couldn’t cut the tortilla with my own silverware, can’t imagine with plastic. I just ate the meat, but didn’t leave a review because I wanted to give them another try. This time I ordered a combo and double checked to make sure to say no tomato but the app choice only had add tomato so I assumed it didn’t have any, same with gauc. I tried to scrape them off the tostada but ended up throwing it out. The beef enchilada didn’t have enough sauce so it was raw tortilla on the bottom. It was barely luke warm and quickly got cold and I arrived way early to pick it up and only live 5 minutes away so it should have still been hot. They have a lot of good reviews so maybe I’ll give them another try sometime in the future. 🤔

Excellent casual diner. Great flavors in the food. We had the Guadalajara Special and Carnitas. Order at the counter, and they bring the food to your table or booth. I would highly recommend it for a quick meal or takeout. The taste will bring us back.

They are always quick and efficient. Food is always good. My nephew is a regular and has befriended one of the employees and he gives my nephew who is 6 a chocolate milk every time! We love coming here!
