One of my favorite restaurants in Sandpoint. My favorite coffee and crepes.

Very nice space and nice people, but my service experience was unusual and didn't find the croissants to be very good.
Went in early morning 15 minutes after they opened, liked the vibe and people, but after ordering and paying for two Lattes and three pastries they realized the espresso machine had not been turned on and would take 20 minutes or more to heat up.
They refunded the espresso charges but not the TIP given in expectation of a nice Latte prep. So ended up paying a tip for just three pastries in a bag AND had to spend time with them along with stopping at another shop for the coffee.
The croissants were very doughy, so not enjoyable. Flaky surface but dense otherwise. Apricot center on one was just sugary and not good quality.
The Guglehupf was primarily a little donut shaped chocolate cake with a dense hard white and dark chocolate cap that overwhelmed with a sweet non chocolate taste. That was tossed after one bite. Described as a small coffee cake, so thought it would be good with morning coffee, but actually more of a chocolate like candy.

Very very slow service. Took over an hour to get the crepe I ordered. It was a good gluten free crepe however it was very sweet. I tried something new and it was fun but too sweet for me. I also ordered a coffee which came after my food.

Very new and modern cafe located close to downtown in Sandpoint. Great atmosphere. Easy to find. Plenty of seating. Indoor and outdoor.
Enjoyed the food so much. You can order gluten free if you have allergy issues and they can make it the way you need it.
Friendly staff. Very helpful and kind. Check it out.

This place is so cute! I’m from Michigan and I was passing through Idaho on our way to Canada and I’m so glad we stopped here on a whim! I wish I had time to sit inside and eat but I grabbed the food to go so we could get back on the road, but omg the food was delicious! I got the caprese sandwhich and my husband got the Black Forest sandwhich. I also got the soup of the day which was pumpkin coconut bisque and gosh it was amazing! Overall so stinken cute and loved the aesthetic inside! (Don’t mind my photos they’re from in the car but just showing how good my food was!) highly recommend you stop here, the workers were super nice!

We spent three days in Sandpoint and every day at The Bernklau! The ambience alone is worth a visit! On our trip we finally got an excellent espresso here (unfortunately not elsewhere before). I had the Caprese Sandwich and the Tuscan Sun Salad on the first day and the Crepes No 5 on the second day - all excellent and highly recommended! The gluten-free carrot muffin was the crowning glory on the third day. You can go without gluten if something tastes this good. I hope to be back in Sandpoint again soon, and then 100% sure that I'll be back at The Bernklau. I'm already looking forward to my next visit and my next contact with the great and super friendly staff.

We love espresso and rarely find a cafe with a good one. Here it is excellent, just like the gluten-free crepes: fresh, tasty and plentiful. Everything very clean. A must do in Sandpoint. Gladly again at any time!
