Sam's was great, for a long time. Over the last several years, post-covid, it feels like service and quality went down. As of this posting they have actually just closed down and the current owners are done.Maybe whoever picks up the reigns can bring it back to its glory days. The speakerboxes were broken for years and never repaired, car hop service had been discontinued for quite some time. The interior dining room was reduced by 75%. The atmosphere was severely lacking/non-existent, leading up to the recent closure.
Parking: Parking lot has never really been well kept. Lots of pot holes, and large divots.

Great burgers here as well as onion rings, and root beer floats! There was no carhop service when we came today, but it was just as easy to walk up to the window to order. We ate at one of the outdoor picnic tables. It’s a scenic country drive to get here from Rockford.

We have eaten at Sam's before, so I should have left a review long before now. They deserve your fast food business. They have great food, surprisingly low cost, and friendly service, all with a nostalgic eat-in or outside seating. After walking up to the order window to the smiling face of the order taker, we took our time selecting our meals and still had a smiling order taker when done.I ordered a quarter pound burger basket with everything, and my wife ordered a grilled ham and cheese. It was served hot and fresh within about 5 minutes we ate outside and both enjoyed everything.
Kid-friendliness: Ice cream and picnic tables.
Parking: Within feet of the outdoor order counter.

The double cheeseburger I got was delicious. The milkshake was fantastic. The young woman who took my order was friendly and engaging.I really enjoy the inside of Sam’s. The table numbers being held up by retro cars was a nice touch.

Good food and service. Their homemade rootbeer is delicious! Wish they would have came out to the car so we could have got the full Drive-In experience, but there was signs on the stall menus saying to order at the window.

During my stay in Illinois, I was attracted to the sign that displayed "Ice Cream Nachos," and couldn't wait to dine here after I finish my race. The novelty of ordering through an intercom was a no go since it wasn't working when I was there. Instead, I ordered through a window and sat inside the restaurant. The nachos were broken waffle cone pieces. Since I got the basic one, the dip was vanilla ice cream with chocolate fudge. I was hoping to mix the two perfectly, but the chocolate wasn't cooperating. The Coney Cheese Fries were delicious, many flavor bursts all around, just missing my favorite, ketchup! Next year, when I return, I want to get the nachos with everything.

My family used to love coming here. Sadly, today was the last time we will be going. It has gotten so expensive for just burgers and fries. Our family of 4 spent $52 and one of just got a grilled cheese and water. And then they charged us almost two bucks for using a credit card for the privilege of already spending way too much for what we got. To make it worse, you have to order outside at the window even if you are dining in or pulling into car hop parking. Half the dining room is closed and that also ended getting soda refills. They also pared down the menu to the point of having very limited options. Only reason I left 2 stars is because they have awesome cheese fries (but each cup of cheese is now 1.79.) Thumbs way down.
