Mixed Experience at Bar Roma

We came to Bar Roma to celebrate my husband's 40th birthday and were really looking forward to it. The wine selection was great, and the meatballs were truly out of this world—definitely a highlight!

Unfortunately, we were incredibly disappointed with our main dishes. The chicken parmesan was just okay—it lacked flavor and felt quite bland. The biggest letdown was the pappardelle with braised oxtail ragu. While the noodles were cooked perfectly, the oxtail was mostly chunks of fat with little to no actual meat in it, and the dish as a whole lacked seasoning.

In conclusion, if you're looking for a fun spot with great wine and appetizers, Bar Roma delivers. But if you're hoping for a full-course dining experience with flavorful entrees, it might not be the best choice.

The house-made pasta is delicious! Full stop. We had the Cacio e Pepe, the Lasagna, and the special, which was a chicken sausage Alfredo. The cocktails were seasonal and also very good. Excellent Italian wine selection.

Since moving into the neighborhood five years ago, Bar Roma has been a highlight. The high quality take out was such a high point during the pandemic, with some of the best meatballs in town and the best eggplant parmesan I could remember having.

We have dined in a couple of times since then and every time we have had a good experience and appreciated ordering items not on the take out menu. But in the past year two changes have made us visit and order from Bar Roma less. First, the prices have increased well beyond the rate of inflation, close to 35% price increases relative to 2021. Second, the eggplant parmesan used to be served on a bed of pasta, which made it a more complete and filling meal. For the past year at the higher price ($24.50), it's the eggplant only, not served with any pasta. This change has really reduced the value for money of my favorite dish on the menu.

As a result, we now order from/eat at Bar Roma about 1/3 as much as we used to, because it's harder to justify the expense and although the food is very good, it's not a good enough value, for money that we can continue to patronize the restaurant the way we used to.

Food was good, just too pricey for the relatively ‘small’ portion size

Drinks were delicious but I would not recommend if you are gluten intolerant. The gluten free penne option was not good.

One of our favorite spots for HH and dinner. Beautiful aesthetic, John is an incredible bartender and makes some of the best cocktails of anywhere on the Andersonville Clark strip, not to mention one of the best HH hours in the area. Definitely go see John ASAP!

I have been wanting to do here ever since I moved into the area 1.5 years ago. This space was special to me as it has previously been my favorite restaurant in all of Chicago, Atlantique. When that place closed down I was very sad and hoped something great would take its place.
I'm not sure if Bar Roma was the immediate replacement but this was so good!
I went for happy hour as the menu looked pretty damn good. Their full menu looks great as well.

I started with the cocktail special which was very tasty. They brought bread out, which I didn't expect, and it was amazing! Warm, crunchy crust and so soft. The oil and Parmesan cheese plate was so good!
Then had the meatball which was amazing, very big plate for a happy hour dish.
Then I had the breaded shrimp and this you too was great! I wanted to order the mussels but was already very full.
Had their white wine which was good.
The space is great! Really love what they did with it.
The bartender was very nice.
Definitely will return. Need to try the full menu next time.
