Ctrl Z Coffee is one of the best coffee shops I’ve visited in Chicago. The coffee and food are phenomenal, the atmosphere is aesthetically pleasing, and both the staff and owner are incredibly accommodating. I highly recommend this place if you’re looking to relax, hang out, or simply enjoy a good book. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ☕️

TLDR: If you prefer coffee shops that are welcoming and more communal, this is NOT the place for you. This is more of a “order your shit and leave” atmosphere despite what they post on instagram.

Longer version: Ive been meaning to check out Ctrl Z as it’s a newish coffee shop in the neighborhood, and im a regular at the surrounding shops in Bridgeport. So, why not?

I walked in 1 hour before closing and asked if they were still open out of consideration as no other customers were in the store. Dumb question maybe, but that’s just me and I was more-so just trying to engage. The girl working there immediately seemed annoyed and put off, mumbled something before sauntering over to the register. I ordered the ube matcha - tastes good but not worth the experience and customer service. She mumbled and stared at me throughout my ordering. It was just plain weird and I genuinely felt she was bothered by my presence, just an overall weird and unwelcoming interaction. Idk if I’ll be back, but I would like to redeem them at some point because it’s a modern take on Filipino coffee culture, apparently. I understand people have bad days or maybe they were understaffed (idk, it was empty while I was there). I’ve worked retail and customer service so I understand but I’ve never tried to make people feel uncomfortable.

I ordered a latte, and the coffee was strong and really good. It's a quiet place, making it great for studying or getting work done. The interior is pretty decent and comfortable. I would highly recommend this spot if you are looking for a nice study area or a calm place to enjoy good coffee.

Yesterday's experience was so disappointing. I guess it's only good depending on the barista. We first tried Ctrl Z on 11/30, and the service and lattes were fantastic (different barista). But yesterday they were both abysmal. My husband walked in and smiled and said hello to the barista, and I stepped in behind, doing the same, and the barista just stared at us with no expression on her face and no hello back. Okay, whatever, at least the coffee will be good. Especially since there was no line and she had plenty of time to make it with care. But nope. My beloved pandan latte tasted like milk this time. No balance. My husband got an ube latte, and it had zero flavor. It was so bad that he just decided not to drink it, and we left for another cafe a few blocks away. We lost out on money, but the barista had such a bad attitude that we didn't even want to ask her to fix it. All of this sucks because we had quickly become big fans of ctrl z, even added it to my blog, but its inconsistency with baristas will keep us from returning.

The service was not great, which I thought would be made up by the coffee. Alas, the ube lattes we got tasted like plain iced lattes. Was very disappointed and will not be returning. Ended up going across the street to Fat Peach for a plain vanilla latte. Not worth the price for the hype.

I’m so lucky to have CTRL Z in the neighborhood. It’s hands down one of the best spots in the city for coffee. The staff is also very lovely.

Awesome little shop in Bridgeport. It's very quiet, cozy and peaceful. From the zen sand garden to the little newspapers they have around, everything just (quietly) screams of home. I had a caramel latte and not only was it tasty, it also looked very appealing. I'll definitely be back
