went here on 11/9 at 10am and the front register person was oddly rude and barely spoke to me. It’s hard to support local cafes when their employees are not friendly

Easily my favorite coffee shop in the city. The cold brew is always delicious, especially with a bit of vanilla syrup. Even though there are other coffee shops in the area using metric coffee, it is never as good or consistent as Engine which is why I keep coming back. They even keep dog treats by the register if you stop by with a furry friend.

Outstanding flat white and reasonable price. One of the best I've found in Chicago. Very basic place but quality coffee.

At open at 7am every day they have one person to take the orders and make the drinks. Depending how long the line is you might be waiting 10-15 minutes just to put your order in. Theyve gotta hire a second employee for busy times.

Food, atmosphere and drinks are great otherwise

Amazing little coffee, giant, extremely friendly staff, and great fresh coffee, pastries, and breakfast tacos!

Stepping into Engine Coffee, you're greeted by a sense of considered calm exposed brick, soft lighting, and wooden accents that feel both grounded and quietly modern. The ambiance doesn’t scream, yet it leaves a lasting impression of intentional comfort, whether you're nestled at the counter or sharing a cozy corner.

The flat white I had was beautifully balanced smooth and rich, with subtle sweetness and no bitterness. Paired with a lightly sweet cardamom cookie, it turned a pause into a moment worth savoring. The service was respectful and focused, giving just enough attention without ever feeling rushed.

One of the better coffee shops in chicago but waited over 20 mins for my croissant to be warmed up and when I went up to ask bc I wasn’t called at all about it, they told me it was ready… that was a little frustrating but apart from that the coffee was made pretty well and fast. Almond croissant was to die for tho so i guess it was wroth the wait?

Edit: The barista was so nice and made my coffee again with less milk bc I like my espresso strong. The bay leaf latte wasn’t sweet and tasted like a herby vanilla latte, probs wouldn’t get it again but it was nice trying it out! They are probably one of the coffee shops In okay with getting with whole milk and not oat!

I tried the iced Americano and iced oat milk latte, both were decent, but the flavor was a bit too mellow for my taste. I’d probably add an extra shot next time to get a bolder coffee profile. I was hoping to grab something from their bakery selection, but most items were already gone when I visited around 1 PM on a weekday, so get there earlier if you’re looking for food.

The environment is cozy and definitely a nice spot to study or work. That said, I had some issues with the Wi-Fi being unstable and weak, which made working a bit frustrating.

I didn’t appreciate the interaction I had with the barista, but the coffee is good.
