We have been many times but wanted to especially shout out the absolutely heavenly Valentine’s Day Aphrodisiac Dinner for Two! Unbelievable! We had gotten our Xmas food from them as well which we thought was fabulous and VDay’s was even better. Please support this wonderful little neighborhood gem.

Good breakfast, I find some items are hit or miss. Soyrizo burrito is a HIT! Really good with avocado crema Lox bagel is a hit! I love the smokey lox. Fancy grilled cheese is a miss. Not cheesy enough imo Spanakopita is a hit! Really nice spinach pastry. Not a fan of the croissants either personally, the ones on the sandwich seem a little too thick. GO TO THE DINNER NIGHTS! They are such a wonderful treat with many delicious courses. Updated from previous review on 2026-01-31

My first time at Plants, I tried the Aztec Mocha Latte and it was fantastic and left me wanting more. Rich, spiced, and well-balanced. On my next visit, I tried the Maple Citrus Crème Brûlée…big mistake. It was extremely bland with none of the flavors promised in the name.
Still hoping to relive that initial experience, I ordered the Aztec Mocha Latte again. But this time it was a complete letdown; it was bland, milky, and missing all the notes of chili, cocoa, or cinnamon. It tasted like warm oat milk, nothing more. I had to go home and doctor it with honey and spices just to make it drinkable.
It’s disappointing to spend money and not know what you’re going to get. Consistency matters.

amazing! I wish this spot was closer to me, but I will be going out of my way for it going forward. grilled cheese w/tomato soup and chips and a hot decaf cherry amaretto latte really hit the spot on a chilly January day. food was delicious, and also LOVE the local art on the walls, and ease of purchasing it! highly recommend!

Nice and cozy cafe with yummy pastries, amazing coffee and lunch options like burrito and quiche. Chef Kevin frequently hosts dinner events and vegan cheese making nights.

The Aztec mocha latte is really good. The chocolate croissant is okay definitely not the best croissant I’ve had haha. I went a little out of my way to come here and I kind of regret it. But if you’re in the area- it’s a nice spot.
I’ve been to small vegan cafes like this around the world and I’ve worked at one—my experience at Fancy Plants was fairly average. I would say if you’re visiting Chicago I wouldn’t go out of my way to come here, but if you aren’t too far and need breakfast, it’s always ideal to have a 100% vegan spot. I got the croissant breakfast sandwich with added veggies and the salad side as well as a maple citrus creme brûlée latte. I used a fork and knife to eat my sandwich with the salad. I think it would’ve been a bit bland without. The croissant was a bit dry (maybe slightly stale). I agree with others that chips are an odd side. I also know that kitchen space at these types of places tends to be very minimal, making well-executed options like breakfast potatoes less of a possibility. I would ditch the sides honestly and amp up the sandwich itself—aioli, tomato jam—something to make it less dry/bland and elevated from what someone might make at home. I really only tasted the citrus in the latte so I would call it an orange latte. Not really what I was looking for (trying to feel the maple/burnt sugar fall vibes). The space itself is very small with 6 or so small tables indoors. There were a few people parked with laptops who had finished their food which imo is rude in that small of a space and should be discouraged by the establishment. The seats were full and I saw a few people get takeout or sit outside (a bit chilly) who perhaps would’ve sat inside given the opportunity. I say all this with the love of someone who wants all vegan spots to thrive forever.
It’s nice to get a hearty breakfast sandwich and some coffee drink options, but overall it was just okay. Kind of a barebones place but sometimes that’s all right.
I’m from NYC and the vegan NY bagel was on point!
