Golden House Restaurant & Pancake House

If you’re a Shameless fan, of course you’ve gotta pop in and check this place out. It’s just what you’d expect from a no frills greasy spoon. Good hearty breakfast options and they’re refilling your coffee before it’s half empty.

Bring cash since they are cash only. There’s a Bank of America ATM right next door if you forgot. I got the 2-2-2-2 which comes with 2 buttermilk pancakes, 2 eggs, 2 strips of bacon, and 2 sausage links. Everything was good. The bacon could have been a little crispier and greasier, was a bit on the dry side like it had been sitting under the heat lamp a little too long.

I don’t care how “old” or “vintage” this place is supposed to be—what matters is taste, and these pancakes were a serious letdown. Whoever decided to put this spot on a “best pancakes in town” list must have had COVID and lost their sense of taste and smell.

Our order was just sad: the pancakes themselves were bland, buried under a gallon of what they called blueberry compote, but it was really just overly sweet, jelly-like goo. The whipped cream melted instantly into the mess, only adding to the disappointment. Two people couldn’t even finish one serving—it was that bad.

Chicago has great food everywhere, but this was nowhere near it.

This place is just okay. The first time I visited, I got the 2-2-2-2 breakfast combo. I asked for my eggs overmedium and got them overeasy. The second time I went here, I got an omelet that was a little overcooked for my taste and some pancakes that were nothing special.

As other reviewers have mentioned, Golden House is cash only with an ATM on site.
