Hearty Cafe pancake house

Unbelievable how the staff here is sooooo respectful, courteous, friendly and patient! After dealing with Chicago traffic, this place is such a gem! No matter if you're having a streak dinner or just coffee, troubles just seem to go away in there.

The food is amazing especially tge soups- Chicken Gumbo, chicken Noodle, Cream of Potato. They have great breakfast specials from skillets, chopped steak & eggs, pork chops and more. They dont have a big dessert menu. This restaurant lives up to its name- Hearty Cafe

My partner and I come here all the time. We were so happy to find a local diner that has quick service, great food, and isn’t always super busy. Whenever we come in we are typically sat right away and have our food within 15 minutes of being seated. Tons to choose from on the menu and the prices aren’t cheap but they’re worth what you get. Music can be pretty loud is my only complaint really about this lovely diner.

The waitress was very patient in handling the orders that were not to our taste,.. they replaced the order within hesitancy. I enjoyed the atmosphere. It was a homelike atmosphere. We were greeted at the door by the owner which was a special touch.

I’m going to start off by saying I work for CDPH. I didn't want to make a scene. It took everything in me not to call 311 and file a complaint with Food Protection to pay a visit to this establishment. Now, with that said, let me explain how I arrived at the restaurant ahead of my sister. I asked for a booth and was seated quickly. The waitress brought two cups upside down on saucers and poured coffee into mine while I waited for my sister. Once my sister arrived and turned her mug over, we found lipstick marks on the outside of a supposedly clean mug… okay, no problem. The waitress was appalled and brought another mug. She took our orders. I got a patty melt on rye with mushrooms added, with fries. My sister got the garden skillet with pancakes. It took a while for everything to come. While waiting, I got a cup of cream of chicken & rice soup (too watery and too much lemon), only to have a long hair caught between the bowl and saucer… yes, that went back too. Finally, our food arrived lukewarm. My sister’s butter wouldn’t melt on her pancakes, so we had to send that back as well. By this point, we just nibbled and chatted. Now the bill comes… $52 for this experience! I’m under the impression that management or ownership has changed hands a few times. I know I won’t be returning or recommending this establishment! I’d come into this restaurant within a half hour ago. I placed an order to go: eggs, grits & 2 pancakes. The order was ready super fast, only about 3 minutes… the only item hot was the grits. I don’t like how they put a “likely unsanitary” bowl of grits in the same container as the eggs.

The pancakes are thick as hell. You’ll need a drink for certain.

I absolutely love this restaurant! It's quiet, cozy and the service is excellent. I ordered the Hearty breakfast and it was a lot of food! 10 out of 10 I would recommend!

First time coming, definitely a great cafe experience. Food was great, I had the chicken pesto panini. Unique flavor that was great for a lunch sandwich. Definitely coming back in the future. Pricing was what you expect for today's economy.

I been going to this place for a good 4 years and my experience is always consistent, I really really like this place, the food the people who works there, idk I couldn't say anything wrong with it, for a Solo breakfast, or family or a Big party idk i really like it.
