For the past few years I've always forgot to check this place out as I'm passing by & try out the sausage, but it seems today is the day! I remember the Maxwell street polish restaurant over by UIC that we used to frequent in our high school days so hopefully this one is somewhat similar. Oddly enough this place seems to be always empty which is never a good sign. Also note that it is also *CASH ONLY* with an ATM next to the door.Like all Maxwell's, there are no seats. The working class stiffs stand in line to grab their food then maybe chat amongst eachother before leaving. There is a stainless steel shelf here, but looking around I wouldn't dare eat inside since it doesn't look clean at all. Being across the street from the red line, I'm sure all sorts of shady characters come through which is why a cash only place might not see many customers around here. The place is staffed with only a chef & cashier. They both were friendly & got my order out within 15 minutes.Philly Cheese Steak Combo:Appearance - It doesn't look like much because they put everything on the bottom of the meat. Definitely not photo friendly because of this. It has green peppers, mayo, onions & mozzarella cheese all on the bottom. The bread is a soft hoagie bread that is lightly toasted 3/5Taste -This one is middle of the road. Everything is cooked perfectly, but the meat's seasoning is where it is lacking. It lacks that distinct Philly Steak taste, but isn't a bad sandwich. There's plenty of meat to go around as well. 3/5Overall, I wish I could support this place more. They definitely could use the business, but I would suggest that they change their cash only policy since this is probably one of the worst spots to employ such a policy although I do admit the policy itself could be because of people using stolen cards or doing chargebacks. It's also of note that they do have a digital POS system so it's not like they can't take cards...they just won't. With individual sandwiches averaging at $7.99 across the board it won't break the bank which is good. This place is also not clean & looking up their health code violations shows that they've failed consistently in the last few years which includes having either rats, insects, other animals or a combination of them (yuck.) Given the number & type of failures, I can only assume this place was on the verge of being shutdown by the city.2 out of 5 starsOh and I forgot to get the sausage!!! Ugh!!!!

Got a double cheeseburger from here, as I was craving one. I walked in and it was really dingy and unclean in there and it had a weird smell. The cashier was nice enough. I decided to give the food a try even though the cleanliness was not up to par, and I have to say that I am pretty disappointed. The meat tasted a bit off and there was barely any cheese. If they were to improve the sanitation and feel of the place, I’m sure that it would be more inviting and the food will taste better simply based off of perception of the establishment.
