Why did it take so long to discover 5 Leaves Eatery? The family-run restaurant at 405 East 75th Street in Chicago's Chatham/South Shore/Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood, east of the Dan Ryan Expressway, won the 2107 Jean Banchet Award for Chicago's Best Ethnic Restaurant. Since 2006, owner Constance Simms-Kincaid has earned a reputation for her southern-style comfort food for all-day breakfast and lunch, including southern fried chicken and shrimp and grits, hailed as one of Chicago's 50 best dishes. But I learned about 5 Loaves Eatery via a magazine article that tapped its Turkey Cristo sandwich as one of the top 10 sandwiches in Chicago. It consists of turkey, Swiss cheese and cheddar cheese nestled between slices of egg-and-milk soaked bread, then deep fried until golden brown and sprinkled with powdered sugar and served with a side of raspberry preserves. It tastes even better than it sounds. Meanwhile, my wife gave a thumbs up to the southern fried chicken with potato salad and sauteed spinach. I'm told the catfish/shrimp, a catfish filet with 10 pieces of shrimp and sides of spaghetti and green beans, also is highly recommended. Breakfast lovers will enjoy pancakes, omelettes, Belgian waffles, French toast and breakfast sandwiches. 5 Loaves Eatery is open from 8 to 2:30 Wednesday through Saturday and 9 to 3:30 on Sunday. Why the name? From the Biblical tale of Jesus feeding the multitudes with five loaves of bread and two fish. The Kincaid family makes due with the Turkey Cristo.
