we came on for chicago restaurant week and were in for a treat. the tom yum soup was by far my favorite — hot and very lemon grass forward. delicious. the crispy lobster was very very good as well. rainbow sushi was so tender and delicate. overall a good experience. the service was a little off, maybe because we were in the last reservation slot (8:30) so most of the food came out all at once (instead of coursed) which was a little hectic. but i would eat here again

Food was ok nothing super wow.Our table was by the window and it was super cold. It is not the cleanest restaurant...look at the pendants lights on the left of the door full of spider webs and dust and bathroom not clean.Cute place nothing special though

I live close by & always wanted to check this place out. So happy we did & as suspected we are big fans now. Highly recommend making a reservation as this place is packed to the gills on any given night. Even though it feels packed you still have a sense of intimacy and privacy at your table. It’s definitely a place to converse and enjoy your dinner company and keep your phone put away in your pocket. Of course I had to take pics to share but next time I am fully tuning out. The service is a really nice pace, not too much checking in and a lot of time to enjoy your dishes. We went for the Chicago Restaurant Week specials and the menus and price point really blew us away. The decor is simple and cozy and the lighting was divinely dim. They had great little lamps on every table that assist with being able to see the menu without disrupting the ambiance.
The one and only little negative thing I’ll say, and I’ll preface this by sharing that my husband is a professional chef of 20yrs and I’m a seasoned home cook- one dish we ordered tasted like butane so strongly that we couldn’t finish it. What may have happened is the flame torch had incomplete combustion, or if you don’t let the initial burst of gas burn off, you can ruin a dish. I was so excited to try the Richman Rainbow sushi dish and it was absolutely gorgeous when it arrived but we both took a piece and it completely tasted like butane. I tried a second piece to ensure it wasn't a fluke. I then put the dish up to my nose and it reeked. We left the dish alone and ate the other things that were coming to our table and when we gave our server the feedback it wasn’t well received. We were as nice as possible about it but did want to let them know that there was an issue. We didn’t want free food or a replacement, just to let them know that they may want to adjust their torch. Our server seemed to take it personally which is a shame. I unfortunately tasted butane in my mouth for the rest of the night no matter what I ate.
But, truly, did not ruin our experience at all and we will eat here again. I would just be wary of any dish that highlights being torched in the future.
The regular menu is extensive and we cannot wait to come back and try more! So happy we popped in.
The pictures speak for themselves but I also shared the menus from the special week. And holy schnikeees the berry compote that came with the cheesecake was INSANE. Best I’ve ever had. The Tonkotsu Ramen was top tier, I will be craving that broth for days. Let’s keep this place open! A total treasure. I loved the wood and gold paneling details on the ceiling and walls.

I have been coming to this restaurant for YEARS. Way before the new owners etc but I stopped going as often because it’s just not the same.. this restaurant is either a hit or a miss. Never a guarantee that the food will be good whenever you come in. Today I decided to get some takeout & the food was horrible. My rice barely had chicken.very blend. My Thai pad noodles were just very poorly made. I payed 3 dollars extra which came out to be 16 dollars for these noddles that only had 3 shrimps and the noodles were horrible . Not surprised that the food wasn’t good because like I said walking into this establishment you never know if the food will be good. I would expect better because the food is pricey. you definitely don’t get your moneys worth.

Restaurant week. All courses that were cold came straight out of the fridge. We were told sashimi and nigiri was not available. Other table got that. When asked the server said that they were ordering from regular menu! So don’t go for restaurant menu you will be treated poorly. Also who serves like warm miso soup?!?!

Service was great. Food was great. Prefer a saltier soy sauce but it got the job done. The restaurant is a bit cramped. Rolls are small for the price. Other than that, very much enjoyed my experience. Would probably just prefer another place that is a bit roomier with better bang for the buck.

Reliably great food, friendly service, some nice mocktails on their cocktail menu as well.
My only complaint is the QR code menu - staring at your phone on a date isn't ideal, but the vibe is worth it.

The food is amazing but the service is just god awful and the people in line for pickup really kill the atmosphere. It also makes the restaurant horribly cold because the door is held open by those in line!

Excellent, excellent, excellent!
If you follow my reviews on google you know that I am a sushi lover ! And I try new places often! The first thing I do when I try new sushi places ; I don’t look to the menu I go to the chef directly and I ask him to surprise me with the best he has to offer ! I tell him : I don’t have allergies and I love everything and I ask him to give me his best 5 rolls!
And to be honest I never get surprised as much as I got trying Kraken sushi ! It was my lunch break and they were the only place open at that time and I was supper surprise not only the quality was supper high but the chef was excellent in choosing the perfect 5 rolls that ( they are not repetitive like most places do) but they are totally different but yet completely complement each other! If other places i ranked as A he definitely ranked A++!
Thank you Kraken you are definitely going to see me again and again ! Keep your quality up !!! I forgot what my rolls were called ( the names ) but I put the picture I hope that helps

Got take out on a Sunday night. Rainbow roll, San Jose and Mr postman rolls are fresh and tasty. My only knock would be to see more compostable packaging in take out (to their credit there is a logo glossy take out box but would rather see that money spent on a true compostable solution). Will be back for dine in.

Thank you for the stellar vegan options! I will be back to try each vegan maki, one by one. Service was fast, we were in and out in less than an hour.
Vegetarian options: Separately labeled vegan and vegetarian menus with signature, interesting rolls in addition to classic options like avocado and sweet potato rolls
