IM SOMEONE WHO LOVES CUSTARD š®
Im back! Happy to announce my return to reviews. I was totally reviewed out for a while but lucky and grateful to return to these previous experiences that still deserve some love!
Split frozen was decadent and full of diabolically diabetic treats. The misses wasnāt hungry but i shovel the custard right in my mouth and jumped with sweet joy as it covered my tastes buds.
Would have it again, totally.
Best,
Thanks š

Recently, I came to order a coffee while I was with a stroller, and my little one was sleeping. It took 10 minutes to make my coffee. I was just dreaming of enjoying it while my baby slept, but that felt like forever as one staff member was teaching another how to make coffee. Dear staff, if a mom with a baby comes to you, please make the order quickly.

So many amazing options for toppings! The portion sizes are huge for custard, I could barely finish one scoop. They also have a ton of different types of candy and sodas throughout the store. Will definitely be back soon!

One of my favorite frozen custard stores in the city! The portions are huge so keep that in mind while ordering your size! The creations are extremely decadent and rich! Highly highly recommend getting the berry concretes. And they always have a fun seasonal flavor as well! And in addition to all the custardy goodness, they have a really cute candy store section with all the classics you can think of and have memories of! All in all a very nostalgic ice cream shop guaranteed to take you back to your childhood!

PLACE HAS ROACHES!! Was getting chocolate from the case when I saw a roach crawling around in there. Employees told me that owner refuses to acknowledge this problem and theyāve had problems with it for months. Absolutely disgusting!!

They have good custard. But, man, their dessert case is abysmal. They don't have any consistency with regard to what they stock. And the quality isn't consistency either. I was looking for one kind of cookie today, which I've gotten in the past. They didn't have it in stock so I bought another kind and, when they handed them to me, were hard as a rock. So they swapped them out for a different kind of cookie (which I had to choose even though it's not really what I wanted...but I'd already paid). Those cookies weren't much better. So, for $15, I got 2 rock hard cookies that I didn't really want and a brownie. They really need to stock the same stuff and figure out how to set a timer when they're baking. Stale/over-baked goods are really a problem. And, with the prices they charge, I'd expect more attention to quality.

Writing this anonymously as an EMPLOYEE who worked here whilst enduring and seeing firsthand the various shady things the owner does for a very long time before quitting! This place has failed the health inspection on numerous occasions, the employees are hired whilst not having their food handling certificates and the owner himself does not make it a priority to have an updated food handlers certificate, he has joked himself about not having it on hand and needing to renew it many times whilst making no effort to do so!
This is obvious and reflected in the manner in which he runs the place. The place is overrun with a cockroach infestation, I have seen the bugs everywhere. Including inside the custard machine, under the cabinets and even inside the chocolate case!! If that alone was the only issue I would not be leaving this review. He also tells all employees to shut off the water dip wells whenever possible. This is noted to be highly unsanitary if you have ever gotten your food service license, you know that dip wells must have constant flowing water whilst the store is open. The second location on Western does not have a cockroach infestation, but the custard machine routinely has rotted custard on the back of the machine. So much so that the smell resembles spoiled milk or rotting yogurt. Disgusting.
When the owner runs out of sanitizer for the dishes, he will employ the use of bleach. Which is particularly unsafe and unsanitary as most of the dishes used in the store are plastic.
Aside from the blatant unsanitary conditions at the store, the employees themselves are mistreated. There have been several occasions where employees will collectively quit due to underpayment, the owner replies on tips to have employees receive minimum wage. The business is listed as having table service which is how this is able to be swept under the rug. Lickity has not offered table service post-covid, and thus the employees are supposed to be paid minimum wage plus tips. After being pressured to raise wages, the wage is still under minimum (It went from $11 to $14 for regular employees, and $16 for most managers, when minimum wage in Chicago is $16.20). Overtime and Holiday pay are not a thing here, of course.
Not only that, but the amount of disrespect and name calling the staff has to endure is ridiculous. With the owner himself making snarky remarks and gossip to other managers and employees. The owner will often put down and call his staff (most of whom are children under the age of 19) names. The amount of racial micro-aggressions and gender based aggression from the OWNER is ridiculous and astounding. Iāve heard dismissals of gender identity, sexuality and often have witnessed comedic levels of racial tension from the owner and upper management.Things such as pronouns are not often respected at all. When employees suffer from accidents at work (often caused by improper training and broken food equipment such as for example, a hot fudge machine with a broken dial which causes burns and hot water to spew at employees, causing painful burns), he often blames employees for incompetence and shows little care or remorse for using broken equipment.
I will also mention the frequent times that the āmanagers,ā which are really just kids who have to run the place when the owner is not there, are not able to take sufficient breaks and meal breaks due to the busy lines and demand and understaffing.
Cases such as having a 16 year old employee be promoted to manager but not being paid adequately in an effort to avoid legal hassles are not abnormal here. Not only that, but the kids are treated as adults and ridiculed as such as well.
I would say the only good thing about this place is the staff who are often very friendly and helpful. Despite the ridiculous conditions which they work under, I never had any issues with my fellow coworkers as the environment when the owner is not present is pleasant despite the conditions of the establishment and the long hours and lines that we had
