Delicious well prepared and presented dishes
The Chicken Mole is by far my favorite but it's all wonderful. I will certainly make this a top spot for me.
We came to this restaurant to celebrate a date night for my husband's birthday. Food: After hearing great reviews about this spot, we felt that the food was just okay. The presentation leaves you with a great desire for more flavor. Pulpo seemed to be missing a spark, it is served with a spicy bruchetta like sauce, the burrito for $26 did not make a creative taste impression. The ambience is pleasant except if you are seated in front of the food's warming lamp, unluckily that's were they sat us. Service was friendly and polite. Having so many great choices nearby, we feel this place needed to offer a bit more for the popularity and price.

So much flavor and authenticity. We ate all the vegetarian dishes and they were amazing. The beans, fresh tortillas, and salsa were highlights.

Ordered a few dishes - not that good… too spicy or not enough salt… Spent almost $200 for two people…

We wanted to try one of the most talked about Mexican Restaurants in Chicagoland. The hype was hi and the reviews very confidence inspiring. Unfortunately, it did not lived up to the hype. For starters, it was impossible to get a good table without a reservation. We were offered a high table, and the chairs were most likely made in hell, as these were some of the most uncomfortable chairs I have sat on. My wife being skeptical, ordered the burrito. Me, being the adventurous type, ordered the Shank a La Cochinita Pibil. Things started to go south, when my wife's dish was brought out, and mine was nowhere to be found. Immediately she jumped right in. Her first impression, although flavourful, it was salty beyond normal enjoyment. Since I didn't have a dish yet, she, in an act of solidarity, stopped eating so I wouldn't have to eat alone. Some 10 to 15 minutes later my dish came out. To my surprise, the dish was not even hot, it was room temperature at best, which begs the question, why then did I have to wait that long? Now, I've had the opportunity to travel the world, and I've eaten some very spicy food; i.e., Korean, Thai, Chinese. For some unknown reason, even though the plate was flavourful, the spice was sufficient to make the experience quite uncomfortable. The part that I don't understand is, if the dish is supposed to be that hot, why wasn't that brought up when I ordered? All in all, we were really looking forward to the evening and the experience. Unfortunately, the place did not live up to the hype, at least not this time around. Would we return? Maybe, but we certainly need to give this one time, enough to see if we can forget a not so great experience.

Food was decent and well prepared but our experience detracted from it. We had a reservation at 830, got there at 8:25, didn’t get seated until 8:45. It was a cold fall evening, and the door was propped completely open, so we stood freezing in the doorway for 20 minutes. My girlfriend was agonizing. When we sat, we didn’t have a menu for 10 minutes until the waiter came but and realized. Everyone was very nice, just executed poorly. The waiter was very busy it seemed like. Sadly the long, cold wait in the doorway was the thing that kind of ruined the experience, coupled with the lack of attention in terms of service.

We went for my sons birthday and the service and host were fabulous. They were sweet enough to get a candle for the tres leches cake slice we ordered for dessert. The cake was delicious. We ordered Aguachile for appetizer and it was scrumptious. But that was all I liked in our meal. My kids got the Steak Burrito which they liked. I got Heritage Pollo con Mole Poblano. The chicken was perfectly roasted but I personally did not like the mole sauce. I just found the dish to be very bland. Also get the half order. The portion size is huge. Overall I did not feel our meal lived up to my high expectations.

Everything we tried was absolutely delicious! All of the moles were great and the flavors were so unlike the ones I've tried at other Mexican restaurants. The drinks were also so impressive (especially the margaritas)! All in all, a great place to spend a Friday night!

Mi Tocaya has been on my list for a long time, and I can't believe I waited this long. Homey and lively ambience and one of the best meals I've had in Chicago in a while. For the affordable price and the exceptional experience, I would highly recommend this to anyone.
Everything we got was either really good or great, but the steak burrito was the consensus star of the show for our table - probably one of the best burritos I've ever had. If you are contemplating getting it, GET IT, you won't regret it.
The chicken, fish, and octopus all were excellent as well. For dessert, we got the Tres Leches cake and it had a perfect texture and balance of flavors.
Between 4 of us we enjoyed everything we drank from a wide selection of cocktails and mocktails, you can't go wrong with the beverage menu.
Will be coming back soon!

Update to review:
Had horrible food poisoning from the steak burrito that caused extreme sickness. I should have read reviews before going because other people have complained of food poisoning from this establishment. I do not recommend.
Beautiful atmosphere with very over priced food. The food was all spicy and salty. Portions were small and the menu was hard to understand. The guacamole was the best.

Excellent food and service. I had the scallop ceviche and blue crab quesadilla. Both were amazing. Be sure to order their Tres Leches for dessert.
The inside is quite loud. So if you prefer quiet, book a table outdoors. Will definitely be back.
