It was our first time here and we absolutely loved it. We tried the bomboleros and they were the incredible.

The owner, John, was super welcoming and treated us so kindly. He went out of his way to answer any questions we may have and we custom ordered a cake, which not to mention will be ready tomorrow morning!!

The gelato is great, but that's about it.

Seeing another recent review about a terrible sandwich inspired me to share my recent experiences. It seems like there's a pattern forming here.

I've gotten a few sandwiches lately and every time it takes at least 15 minutes for them to make it. I got the pepper and egg breakfast sandwich yesterday, which yes, took 15 minutes. When the worker handed it to me, I was immediately concerned because the sandwich wasn't hot. At all. I opened it up and, sure enough, lukewarm at best. It also was literally just eggs and slices of green pepper. No salt. No pepper. No cheese. Served on a baguette that was very hard to chew. Complete waste of money.

On top of that, the employees they've had recently (seemingly an entirely different staff than last summer) are just straight up angry about something, all the time. I came in and ordered a sandwich for lunch a couple weeks ago and I obviously ruined the girl's day. After being in the back for at least 5 minutes, she came out and told me that they didn't have any basil so I couldn't get the sandwich I ordered. Cool, so I get to order a different sandwich and the waiting clock starts over again. The communication was awkward and made it feel like I was in trouble or something. Sorry for ordering a thing on the menu. My bad, I guess.

Meanwhile, other people are coming in and lining up with no one behind the counter to help anyone because she's in the back waiting for the vegetables on my sandwich to finish growing.

Having a sandwich menu should not disrupt the flow of service that dramatically. If you can't staff someone to make sandwiches as they get ordered or train and equip your counter staff to make sandwiches quickly, do not offer sandwiches.

Final thought, get some music playing in there. Standing around by myself (waiting for a sandwich) with no sound other than being serenaded by the hum of refrigerators is not a good atmosphere. Having some music playing is restaurant/cafe 101.

Went there one Thursday night, 7:50pm, they are closing at 8pm. Girl was MAD we entered the place, she even said, we are closed but okay, I thought I locked the door. She had an attitude, complained that she has started cleaning in the back. More people came in, she got pretty rude. We certainly didn't feel welcome there.

I typically don’t leave complaints, but I felt compelled to share my recent experience as it was quite disappointing.

I attempted to call ahead to place an order for pickup, but no one answered the phone after multiple tries. As a result, I came in person and ordered two eggplant sandwiches and one Italian sub. I was told the order would be ready in 15 minutes, but it ended up taking over 45 minutes.

When I asked someone from the kitchen for an update, he laughed and told me it was “made to order” — even after I explained how long I had been waiting. To make matters worse, when I received my order, I noticed the young woman who had helped me was visibly upset and crying, which was also concerning.

Once I got home, I found that both eggplant sandwiches were soggy, drenched in sauce, and unappetizing. One had barely a single piece of eggplant, while the other was overloaded — there was no consistency at all.

Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time I’ve experienced long wait times here, even when the shop appears to be empty. I’m requesting that a manager reach out, as I would like to discuss this matter further.

This place went way downhill after opening. Used to be amazing. Too many stomach issues to be coincidental. My friend got sick after eating here too. Just look at their own videos, they advertise hot food and the ground beef looks so dark like very bad quality and not stored well. Wish I saw it before eating here. I don't know how it passes any inspections. Not surprised to see other recent reviews are poor too. Everything changed and now they advertise a new location in the burbs under their own name and not the flagship bakery in italy but the same products, fishy... I went to the one in Italy and it's not even close to it.

Our first time here : horrible customer service, server with attitude and not friendly at all. We ordered one thing and they substitute without telling us ahead , with something totally different. When we asked she said they were out of what we ordered. Kind of dishonest!
It seemed like we were troubling with our order.
Very disappointed 😞

This is only regarding my sandwich order. The bakery goods looked delicious. I agree with reviewer, City Slicker. I had the Italian Sub sandwich. The bread was too hard for a sandwich with soft ingredients inside, like tomatoes, Lettuce and cheese. Also I waited 20 minutes as the only customer. Too long for a simple sandwich.

Bad experience. Do not come here if you’re paying in cash. The cashier woman tried to take all of my money without giving change and said it was because they didn’t have any.

My husband and I have loved this place for gelato for a long time and were excited to bring our friends who just moved into the neighborhood to try it. The gelato was fine (didn’t seem as fresh though), the atmosphere and the service in the store seems to have drastically changed, and it didn’t seem as clean as we remember it. It took several minutes for someone to ask if they could help us (we were the only people inside) because the employees were too busy talking to each other and then when we were being helped the vibe was that we were a burden. I’m not sure what’s going on and hopefully it’s a fluke. We’ll definitely give it another chance but hoping management steps in and addresses some of these things so we can continue to enjoy coming back!

I am hoping it is just a fluke because I have been bragging about this place since they opened but my last two visits were disappointing. What ever changes they have implemented are not for the better. Perhaps managing multiple locations has put all eyes on the new place. The vibe is off, the pistachio gelato has taken on a neon tone and is gritty, the vanilla is also gritty and not the same quality, the other flavors are definitely not the same quality, the bombolone filling is sticky and lacking creaminess. The bakery taste like day old. What happened??? It has gone from the very best to I’m not sure what!! I hope this is temporary because it was the only Italian bakery, of many in Chicago, I would recommend. Please say this is just a bad dream!!
