For my last day in Chicago, I wanted to take my cousin and his husband out for a nice dinner as a thank you for hosting me. Penumbra did not disappoint.
From start to finish, everything was on point.
I'll be back in September, and we'll go to Penumbra again!

Absolutely loved this place! From the outside, you’d never guess how cozy and beautiful it is inside — candlelit tables, dim lighting, and such a great vibe. The small menu made it easy to pick, and everything we ordered was delicious including the drinks! I highly recommend their pineapple mojito👍👍 We even met the lovely owner on the way out — so warm and welcoming, just like her entire staff. Can’t wait to come back!

Absolutely superb service and the possibly the best shrimp and steak I’ve ever had. If I could eat every NY strip for the rest of my life that exact way I would. Also the private cabanas you can reserve are great for a nice semi private experience. Will definitely be back!

Really cool on the inside but the steak was expensive and rail thin. Probably wouldn’t go again unless I only ordered the shrimp it was just getting drinks.

Love this place! My boyfriend and I celebrated our anniversary here and it was a wonderful experience. Staff were very friendly and kind, the food was amazing, and the restaurant had a relaxed and romantic vibe with dim lighting. We ordered the scallops for our appetizer, and we also ordered steak, shrimp, and a cheesecake for dessert. Such a wonderful spot! Highly recommend.

This isn’t my first time at Penumbra, and it definitely won’t be my last! I’ve been there for multiple occasions, like work get-togethers and birthdays. I my holiday party here last year, my staff loved it! Everyone has been back, and each time has been fantastic. Our server, Jose, whom usually takes care of me is such a vibe!!! always wonderful, attentive and friendly. The restaurant truly is a hidden gem in Logan Square, offering a warm atmosphere and delicious food. If you’re looking for a special dining experience, you have to check it out!

I was eager to return to Penumbra, as my experience last year was outstanding. Unfortunately, this Valentine’s visit significantly changed my perception of the restaurant.

Upon arrival, we were seated at a table, but I noticed that several private dining areas, which were separated by curtains, were unoccupied. I inquired with a staff member, who kindly said she would check availability and let us know. Our server, Jose, then brought us water, and we mentioned that someone was looking into seating us in one of the private areas. He abruptly interrupted us, almost yelling that no private areas were available and that they would never accommodate such requests unless noted in the original reservation. To our surprise the lady we asked for help turned out to be the owner, Rita. She returned and cheerfully informed us that private areas were indeed available and we could be seated there with absolutely no issue.

The next issue arose with my meal. I had been eagerly anticipating the shrimp dish, which I had thoroughly enjoyed my previous visit. When the dish arrived, I noticed it was missing the pineapple salsa I remembered from last time, which was still listed on the menu. When I asked Jose about this, he rudely cut me off, stating that the menu is constantly changing and that the salsa was no longer offered. His response felt extremely dismissive and uncomfortable.

Lastly, as we were leaving, we noticed a table with Valentine’s Day love coupons. We took one, only to be chastised by a staff member who informed us that the policy was one coupon per table. We were disappointed that we weren’t offered one initially. After clarifying that we had only taken one, another staff member contradicted this, saying that the coupons were no longer available. In addition to all of the aforementioned issues, we noticed upon reviewing our statement that the standard tip we left had been increased without our consent.

This experience was a stark contrast to what I had previously enjoyed at Penumbra and really soured what we thought was one of our favorite restaurants in Chicago. While Rita, the owner, is amazing and so kind, the behavior and attitude of the staff greatly detracted from what should have been a memorable dining experience.
