I like Pepe's food but it's always better to eat on site rather than takeout because it can become soggy. The area and aesthetic of this particular restaurant was not conducive for comfortable dining....in my opinion. I don't live in Chicago anymore but seek out Pepe's whenever I'm in town, unfortunately I can't recommend this one even though the proprietor was welcoming and service was fast.
The food at this location was absolutely disgusting! Been eating at Pepes more than 30 years and this is the only location that I’ve ever said was terrible. The tostado shells and tortilla chips were thin and stale. The beef had a weird taste like it was cooked with well water. And the cheese on my elotes smelled spoiled. Took it back inside and had the lady smell it and she said that’s just how the cheese smells! No it does not! Literally put both dinners in the garbage after...
I have been coming to this location my entire life Pepe's have a different kind of classic Mexican taste with like tostada suiza, burrito Fritos ,which are fried burritos their style of Mexican food is a bit different but still excellent and it has been a staple in my community for as long as I can remember the only thing that bothers me is that depending on what you order they may or may not give you peppers and sauce and I feel like you need sauce and you need peppers otherwise...
