Tell ya a funny story. I've been going in Salonica's for a very very long time. Hadn't been in a while though. Went in and ordered what I normally used to order..........3 scrambled eggs easy, with a side of link sausages.......to go. Basically two sides with nothing else, (toast, grits, whatever). While the food was cooking, I suggested to the cashier that I could, "pay now". He rang it up and told me.......$18.50. I told him you're crazy and walked out. True story. End of my story with Salonica. If you're a restaurant and experiencing trying times because of the economy and or pandemic. You should probably fold. Not offend your client base with absurd and outlandish prices.

It's a shame. Contrary to what some other people say, we like the food there. It's just the staff, especially the guy at the register, just seem like they don't want to be there.

did you know salonica is open at 7 AM? i found out today, and im so happy to share it. when you get here early enough, there are window seats galore (and so we snagged one), from which you can watch all of the finance bros walk to the metra and professors going in the opposite direction, from the station to campus. kids and parents too, biking on the way to daycare.. it’s an endless flow of morning traffic. we each ordered a side of hasbrowns (only vegan option.. sorry y’all) and they were FANTASTIC. with all the works, seasoned into oblivion (there was literally every condiment you can imagine on the table). with some freshly squeezed OJ? you already know… something about being up so early and eating such a simple but happy meal reminds me of being a kid. i think i valued time more, but in a different way—not in the adult way, full of order and ideally to structure and optimize the day (and feeling anxious and awful if things don’t go to plan). more so with excitement and anticipation, wanting to do and see everything! even seconds felt longer, fuller. i was with a friend who was leaving, so with this in mind i tried to soak up all the time i could. i wish people never left, but there they were in front of me and far away, walking through the window frame without casting a second look. what a place for a goodbye, hm?

The breakfast was great. The menu is exactly what I would expect from a diner. The waffles were great, but larger than expected. So I probably should've split one between the two kids. Great value overall. The 4 stars on food is for general lack of seasoning (salt).
Our waitress was very friendly, and the vibe of the restaurant was exactly what I was looking for. Most of the other patrons seemed like regulars -- not a lot of tourists -- which is a desirable quality for me when searching for good restaurants in an unfamiliar place.

Possibly the worst meal I ever had in my life! Greek place bought by Hispanics that do not know anything about Greek food (and possibly any food). Gyro deluxe was just gyro meat with onions and a pile of fries. When we asked about lettuce and tomato that typically is in gyro, they were very surprised. I ordered a curry chicken salad - it was a pound of chicken breast swimming in very greasy curry sauce with literally 3 pieces of lettuce! Can't even call it a salad, more like just cold chicken dish. Absolutely horrible. We saw people next to us ordered a mousaka and it looked revolting. It is the only restaurant in that area, but please do yourself a favor and walk away even if you are very hungry!

This little place specializes in Greek or Greek inspired dishes and was a great find after spending a day in the city.
The prices are quite reasonable, especially for the location.
We had the Avgolemono soup, Gyros Plate, Curry Chicken Salad, and the Salonica Omelette. Everything was fantastic, but our favorite dish was the Curry Chicken Salad.

The service was really good. The food was another issue. I ordered a Gyro w/fries, $18. It was rather small with a minimal amount of meat, hardly any onions & no tomatoes. This was my first & last visit.
