The burgers are tasty, but in my opinion you really need to order a double for a meal. You are also expected to tip even though someone just hands you the food. It’s not restaurant service. If you also order a soft drink and fries by the time you add tax and a tip, almost $30. They do serve beer and wine - which you can’t get at most fast food places. Didn’t try the shakes.

The food was great, no complaints. The customer service was also on point in my interactions. They have kiosks and only 1/3 worked, the empty tables were a bit dirty and their bench chairs are definitely outdated or in need of repair.

Visited around 1:55 PM and ordered a Steak ’n Shake double burger on a lettuce wrap at the Ohio & Michigan location in downtown Chicago. Mid-meal I found a jagged plastic fragment (~1 inch × 2 mm) in the burger. Around the same time I began experiencing substernal chest discomfort—a dull-to-sharp, squeezing tightness along the lower border of the manubrium, radiating down the midsternal line.
I returned at about 4:30 PM and spoke with Bob (manager). I showed him the plastic piece; he apologized and speculated it may have come from packaging used when cutting and releasing patties. He offered me a $10 gift card. While I appreciate the polite interaction, I still feel it’s important to leave this review for food safety awareness.

Arrived starving into Chicago, so glad this place was open late and close to hotel. Burgers were good, service was great. Went back a couple days later and all was good
