I spent $100 on 5 flavorless rolls. The soft shell crab was fishy. Overall it was pretty gross and not the same Shine I remember! Yuck!

I've eaten there several times, always excellent well-priced ample portions, and delicious flavors! Kid-Friendly, exceptionally courteous staff. Great that they have straight Asian as well as sushi! Newly decorated, creating a fresh lovely ambience. Very nice place! PS Their Shanghai menu is a semi-secret delight!

Amazing sushi, one of the best in the city. Has been a regular spot for my friends and I for years. Highly recommend red dragon, Mexican maki and flaming maki.

Disappointed by Unprofessional Communication and Declining Quality
I never leave negative reviews to restaurant , but I feel compelled to share this experience to help others avoid similar frustration. I contacted this restaurant on Sunday to request a reservation for the following Sunday, clearly stating that I needed until Thursday to confirm. See screenshot attached and I have used GPT translated it into English. They did not respond at all for three days. Then, out of the blue on Wednesday, they informed me that my order had already been placed—without my confirmation or consent.
This kind of communication is not just unprofessional, it’s disrespectful. No follow-up, no courtesy check-in, and no regard for the customer’s timeline. It felt like they made a decision for us without our input, which is unacceptable.
To make matters worse, many recent reviews echo concerns about the declining quality of food here. See screenshot of reviews of other Chinese customer. Sadly, our experience aligns with that trend—not just in service, but in overall hospitality.
I hope this feedback encourages the restaurant to improve its communication and respect for customer preferences. Until then, I’d recommend others proceed.

While often known as a Japanese spot, the real gem at Shine lies in its Shanghainese menu. The Drunken Chicken was light and flavorful, and the glazed lotus roots were a standout appetizer - perfectly crunchy, lightly sweet, and filled with glutinous rice. The stir-fried eel & pork belly were fragrant and satisfying, and the scallion oil noodles simple yet comforting. To finish, the sesame ball tangyuan was a lovely dessert - super chewy texture in osmanthus rice wine.
The service was warm and attentive, and the space feels modern yet cozy in a charming corner of Lincoln Park. A true hidden gem for authentic Shanghainese cooking!

Shine is a phenomenal staple to the Lincoln Park community. They execute many dishes well at fair prices. The Chicken Katsu, Chilean Sea Bass appetizer are stand outs - along with many American-style Asian dishes
