Wow!!! What a great meal - the hand rolls were all different and all delicious. Enjoyed the spice blend on the edamame as well. Drinks were tasty and creative. The choices for hand rolls were plentiful and presentation was well done. Service was very good as well. As our server said "fatty tuna is where it's at" - so we saved those for last. Great ending to a wonderful meal. Will be back.

This may be the future of omakase in post-pandemic Chicago. Previously, sushi restaurants were opulent 3-hour affairs, with two dozen lavish courses of exotic fish served to you from all over the world. For their efforts, you paid a princely sum of $300+ per plate and you were happy to do so.
Things have changed. The cost of food has gone way up, so your $300 omakase is now $400 and you suddenly find yourself with considerably less disposable income. So is omakase dead?
Tamu proves it doesn't have to be dead. While the space and experience are every bit as opulent as the best omakase in the city, the courses themselves are a bit humbler and therefore more affordable. They stick to the classics here, no surprises. A couple of cuts of tuna, salmon, mackerel, uni, eel, tomago, and a dessert. You've had all of it before, and you won't be surprised by anything. They're all high quality, and personally prepared by a sushi chef with a strong pedigree. In my case, Max, who had previous experiences at elite establishments like Sushi Suite 202 and Kyoten. He puts great care and effort into each cut, and you feel as though you're at Kyoten, even as your wallet thanks you for your kindness.
60-75 minutes later, you're out and you feel as though this is something sustainable, something you can get away with doing a couple of times per year and feel good about it.
Tamu proves that it is possible to do omakase in this economy and do it well.

Straightforward omakase. I hope they try some new things in the future. The otoro was an add on at the end but worth it.

I came with a friend this past weekend and it was a great experience. This was my first out of hopefully many omakase dinners. We came for dinner which was about $125 per person including all the extra charges. We also showed up about 20-30min before our reserved time and were able to be seated early. The serving staff were very welcoming and the chef was very kind in guiding us through the meal. I only got a few pics, got caught up in the meal haha, but I guarantee the pieces were worth it! I especially liked the Kohada, which I believe will be switched out next month, so catch it while you can (October)! Many of the other pieces were delicious and flavorful including the kanpachi and the temaki our chef made for us. Their rice was also notiable. My friend and I could not stop talking about it. ? Anyways, I highly recommend their omakase whether you do lunch or dinner.

Went with a friend for dinner and we did Omakase. It was a little intimidating at first, since it was our first time doing Omakase. But the chef was amazing at explaining each fish and having patience with us. The food was great and had a great time with our chef. A lot of laughters and accommodating to our tastes. I would also recommend doing a reservation for the Omakase. Since there are only 8 spots with the chefs!

Fantastic experience! The concept is simple but brilliant – fresh, made-to-order hand rolls served right in front of you, allowing you to enjoy them at their peak. The sushi chefs worked quickly but with precision.
What really stood out was the casual, fun vibe of the place. It’s great for a quick bite or even a longer hangout with friends. The staff was super friendly, and they made the experience feel welcoming and relaxed.

My friend has been wanting to check out Tamu ever since they opened late May and they lived up to the hype! This was a handroll specialty restaurant, the fillings were plentiful and flavorsome. I am not the biggest fan of fish, but this spot hit differently. The yuzu kani roll was something that I’ve never had before, plus the gochujang shiromi! The shiromi alone was my favorite. It tasted clean and showed that simplicity is always best. I would recommend!
