Mid sushi at best, the chief's knife skills were not sushi quality, the soy paper used for the rolls was very chewy.
Tried the omakase dinner. Waitress asked about food allergies and preferences (ie how much spicy); mild upcharge for toro, and uni - asked if we were interested in it, mentioned the upcharge (which was minimal), but we appreciated the head's up. The wine list, while not extensive, has a wide representation, and was reasonably-priced.
The food was excellent. High quality of proteins, and unique, innovative, and delicious flavor profiles whether it be a little dollop of garlic topping on a piece of toro, or the shiitake roll which was incredible.
Great value, fun, perhaps modern sushi takes (as opposed to the slice of fish on rice you get in Japan), and great service. Highly recommend.

Dave is the absolute best! He has a ton of knowledge and recommendations for everyone’s individual preferences. Could not recommend this restaurant more all because of Dave!

David is amazing at what he does. He remembers orders and what people like and dislike. He works to make sure your dining experience is nothing short of spectacular!
2025 Edit: I went here again last year and was not as impressed anymore. I no longer think it’s the best sushi in Chicago, it’s pretty good but the last times I went it didn’t taste as good as it used to. Tasted less fresh.
(Old Review)This is by far the best sushi in Chicago hands down. My boyfriend and I stumbled across this place by chance and fell in love with it. Then we couldn’t figure out where we had gone for a while and found it again and their menu had changed slightly but it was still the delicious sushi place we had been to before. The fish there is just so fresh tasting. The combinations of flavors they put in their rolls are amazing. I absolutely love this place and we go back there at least once every time my boyfriend is in town. HIGHLY recommend.

Another delightful Omakase experience at Tanoshii made even more special by the awesome Michelle and David. We got to try a couple of delicious new (to us) creations by the chefs in addition to our favorite escolar with the shitake and truffle oil. Oh, the scallops were especially fresh and perfectly cooked with the crisp coating --- we joked that we could have ended with just more of that! Looking forward to our next dinner here - the chefs were actually recommending another Omakase menu but we went with our usual selection, so maybe next time we will try the nigiri Omakase. Dining early is key to a quiet and more relaxed atmosphere.
Tanisha was Ok, not the greatest sushi but excellent calamari and teriyaki. Terrific service.
This was my second visit there. And it did not disappoint. Everything we had was amazing, we asked the server to choose what we had told him a few things we would like to avoid, and he did a wonderful job. Left their full and happy.

Server was so helpful and kind. Food was delicious. Music was cool too. Have been here many times in the past and will for sure go again! :)
How am I just finding this place? This is genuinely amazing sushi, attentive service, and a nice space. The carrot, ginger salad, the miso soup, and all of the special rolls were absolutely spectacular. Legitimately one of the best sushi meals I’ve had in memory.

Always love it there. The chef specials (mushroom in particular) and the fish and chips are the best. It's a pretty space and relatively quiet. The service is great.
The rolls aren't that flavorful. The rice is off. There isn't enough of it and the texture is too loose so when you pick up the roll it falls apart. I'm surprised this place has a 4.7 star rating but maybe because I went during happy hour the quality was compromised? The service and atmosphere is very pleasant.
