The food took entirely too long and when it arrived was sloppy. The rolls did not stay together and were bland. Would not recommend a visit.

I haven’t even started eating yet but I was disappointed that they didn’t serve alcohol so the owner gave me one from his stash lol. But I’m sure I’d enjoy the sushi! I

I hope my experience was a one off since we’ve been here in the past but today was just not good. We had a few appetizers, a kamikaze roll, a few vegetables rolls and the toro truffle roll. The toro truffle roll was a complete miss, I couldn’t believe that I spent $30 bucks for a roll that tasted spoiled.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Tanoshi Sushi had been on our radar for quite some time, and with the added bonus of the InKind promotion, we knew it was the perfect opportunity to finally pay a visit. Nestled in a space that radiates rustic charm, this restaurant has an undeniable soul and quiet charisma.

We began with the *Fish & Chips* — a clever and elevated twist on the classic. Though portioned for one, it set the tone beautifully. The *Spicy Tuna Mix Tartare* surprised me, especially as someone who doesn’t typically gravitate toward tartare. With creamy avocado, fresh pico de gallo, tobiko, and a balanced heat, it worked harmoniously. The *Gyoza* — deep-fried vegetable dumplings — were impressively large, satisfyingly crisp, and unlike any others we've had elsewhere.

For entrées, we explored a selection of Mike’s signature rolls. The *Spicy Roll* (Snapper, Spicy Tuna, Avocado, Cucumber, Crabstick, Mango Balsamic, and Spicy Mayo) was bold and vibrant. The *Shiitake Roll* stood out for its unconventional ingredients — a thoughtful pairing of escolar, shiitake mushroom, avocado, and crabstick with a delicate chive sauce. While it was one of the more intriguing offerings, it was my personal least favorite, simply due to preference.

The *Softshell Crab Roll* was rich and satisfying, with layers of spicy tuna, cucumber, fried softshell crab, masago, and rakkyo brought together with a punchy chili sauce. But the true star of the evening was the *Toro Truffle Roll*: a decadent mix of tuna, avocado, and oshinko, crowned with otoro, chopped wasabi, tobiko, and a sublime wagyu sauce. Each bite was indulgent, complex, and unforgettable.

Service was attentive and unobtrusive, adding to the tranquil ambiance — no unnecessary noise, just a peaceful, elevated dining experience.

Tanoshi Sushi has certainly earned its place among our favorites. We’ll be back soon — and next time, bringing friends.

A hidden gem sushi spot in Uptown Chicago. All the fish is fresh, and the sauces are incredibly fresh and delicious. The price is worth it considering the generous amount of fish in every dish. Highly recommended, and I’ll definitely be coming back.

I wrote a glowing review about a year ago but it appears there’s been a major change. I was looking forward to a repeat of their delicious soft shell crab rolls but they arrived a little cooler than room temperature with mushy rice and were overall disappointing. The vegetable tempura was lackluster as well. The waitress acknowledged the roll should have been warm and at the end of our meal brought a dessert on the house but that didn’t make up for the dismal experience. My sister and I were the only patrons at 3 in the afternoon. I’m guessing the floor I couldn’t avoid seeing had been dirty for some time.

Immaculate vibes, everyone behind the sushi bar is so friendly and clearly having a great time. My girlfriend and I did the omakase on a whim and it was the most enjoyable sushi experience I’ve ever had. A perfect neighborhood sushi joint.

As soon as I walked into the restaurant, there was a noticeable bathroom smell coming from the restroom in the back. I ordered the omakase, and when they said a lot of food would come out, it turned out they just kept bringing dishes endlessly. But the price didn’t include everything — it wasn’t all covered. I’ve never experienced an omakase like this before. It might be worth looking into how other sushi restaurants run their omakase. Also, they really need to invest in fixing up the bathroom interior and dealing with the odor.
