Love love love Tepalcates. The food is incredible - absolutely the best in Chicago and possibly the best I’ve ever had (used to live in SoCal, am Mexican, have traveled in Mexico often). The service is great and the owner is so kind and attentive. 10/10 and more.

About a month ago, my family and I were looking for a place to live in Chicago, and while in this neighborhood, stopped in at Tepalcates.
While we ended up choosing a home on the other side of town, we WILL be back here! The hospitality was immediate and genuine, the family running the place were friendly and generous, giving us free samples of the delicious drinks. We ordered guacamole for an appetizer which was only a mistake because it was so delicious we filled up and couldn't finish our mains! I had a burrito suadero, which was perfect, and my wife had the quesabirrias. We highly recommend both. Fresh tasting, favorful, spicy enough for me, not overpowering my wife's tastebuds.
Visit this cozy, family owned-and-run authentic Mexican place the next time your path takes you to this part of Chicago. You won't regret it!

A hidden gem! Ordered guac and chips, queso birria and lomo torta along with their in house juices. Everything was delicious and left us craving more. Our Michelin star judge (our toddler) even approved. He’s a picky eater.
Cons: The prices are relatively high for certain items; however, one could argue that you pay for the quality of food. Additionally, you don’t know what you’re paying for as they don’t provide an itemized receipt.
