The food is terrible soul food. They treat black customers with no respect. I can’t wait for the restaurant to fail horribly.

I love the fact that this place is black owned but ran poorly . How do you sell food but you have none to sell and hour before closing time ?!?!?!Great food when you can get it…….

Very important that your consumers do not have to be subjected to your server not walk around with his pants sagging. Not everyone want service with underwear. Also very helpful if the server can remember his tables so that he's not going table to table asking if that's your order.

The cuisine and service at this restaurant have deteriorated dramatically in recent months. As a result, when we arrived at the restaurant and requested a seat before placing our four-person order, the cashier refused. While four other guests waited for their meals, an elderly woman sat in a booth. He had removed his mask as of 03/04/2022, so I was perplexed as to why we couldn't sit. We left the restaurant after being told the order would take 23 minutes and went shopping in Hyde Park. When I returned to the restaurant I noticed the older lady was accompanied by more people and they were all dining in, and eating with her. If it had been the owner and her family, I would not have recognized that as a paying customer. Whatever the case may be. I had an odd feeling after spending $99.75 on a four-person purchase. The candied yams were extremely sweet, and this is coming from someone who usually enjoys the food at this restaurant and has been raving about it to my parents for quite some time. When the cashier took my order, he asked how I wanted my lamb cooked, and I said medium-well, but it was packed well done, and I paid $35 for a small piece of fish, I was disappointed, as was my guest. and the jerk chicken was far too spicy to eat. This is the last time I will recommend this restaurant to anyone.

Visiting from another state and tried this place - the food was really good, seasoned well, and hot. I didn't get my piece of caramel cake - i should've checked the order prior to leaving. The staff and chefs/cooks were pretty nice, they kept checking in with us while we waited for our food.

The food is really good, but still feels overpriced for what's essentially just nicely-plated Southern classics.

This was the second time that I have eaten at this restaurant. The first time was during the grand opening and it was absolutely amazing, the food years later is still absolutely amazing. But the customer service is absolutely horrible. Loud trap music, I felt very uncomfortable with the cashier and the guy that was taking the orders Very HOOD!!! It breaks my heart to see a restaurant with so much potential in such a great area go downhill. This place needs to be cleaned up. Is this a restaurant or CLUB.

Food was great, service was great, byob ??, clean with good atmosphere BUT no A/C. I sweat out my silkpress. Roots were fluffy as hell ?

As it says, the place is no frills. Perfeect place to go after Jazz on 53rd. The food was awesome! Its not Harold's expect to pay a little more ?? The server was personable, fun. He related to everyone young and old. Definately get the yams, everything was good!

I was looking forward to having lunch here with friends - we hadn't seen each other in some time, so it was to be a special outing for us. The restaurant had just opened as we arrived, and as we approached the door a man (manager, waiter?) opened the door and in an unfriendly tone asked us what we wanted. Huh? We told him we came to have lunch. There was another dining party of two women who were asked the same question, which caused them confusion also. Is this not a restaurant? One of my friends asked if we could sit at a table, and the man said, "Well, if that's what you want to do." So much for making customers feel welcome in your establishment. The man acted as if we were bothering him, or he didn't want to be there at work. We were hungry, so we decided to stay and eat. As I stood there in this small restaurant, I didn't see any other workers around, which was very odd. The man then seated the other dining party and then us, and as he walked to get us menus he shouted out that he didn't have dessert or certain drinks. The man brought us menus, but he didn't seem happy to have to do this. Since he made us feel unwelcome with his bad attitude we decided to leave, and as we walked out the door the other two separate dining parties followed right behind us - I guess the bad vibe was too much for them also. Outside we talked with one of the other dining parties and they said they wanted to support this local neighborhood restaurant, but they couldn't with the horrible attitude they encountered. We found another restaurant nearby that was extremely welcoming and served wonderful food - staff was friendly and attentive and made us want to return for our next get together. If I could give The Soul Shack zero stars I would. With restaurants trying to get back on their feet after suffering through Covid shutdowns and worker shortages, scaring your customers away with an unwelcoming bad attitude will not help your business. It's strange, but we were left feeling that this person didn't want our business, didn't want us there or the other dining parties. What type of business functions this way? Why be in business then?

The chicken tasted good, I'm glad because they didn't have many other options to choose from left, sold out. I would have expected more flavor out of the mac and cheese for a soul food restaurant. The sweet potatoes did taste pretty good.
