Not as good as it used to be. Expensive, unseasoned food. Best thing on the menu was the coffee and the waffle.

Tre Kronor is the kind of neighborhood Swedish restaurant that feels like stepping into a sunlit Stockholm kitchen run by your coolest aunt who just happens to be a genius with herring and cardamom. From the moment you walk through the door of this unassuming North Park corner spot, the air is thick with the scent of warm dill, buttery potatoes, and freshly baked limpa bread that should frankly be illegal. The Swedish meatballs are legendary (tender, nutmeg-kissed orbs swimming in a cream sauce so velvety you’ll want to write poetry about it), but the real dark horse is the pytt i panna: golden cubes of potato, beef, and onion topped with a perfectly fried egg and a side of pickled beets that pop like edible jewels. Every plate arrives with the kind of generous, heartfelt portions that make you feel genuinely taken care of, and the lingering taste of lingonberries will haunt you in the best possible way.
What transforms Tre Kronor from great to unforgettable is the soul behind the food. This is a family-run sanctuary where the same servers have been greeting regulars by name for decades, where the coffee comes with free refills in heavy ceramic mugs, and where weekend brunch means a line out the door for cloud-like Swedish pancakes served with lingonberry jam and a side of pure joy. The vibe is effortlessly cozy (think blonde wood, blue-and-yellow accents, zero pretension), yet every detail is flawless: the herring platter alone is a masterclass in balance, from silky pickled to mustard-dill to curried. In a city full of trendy openings that flame out in six months, Tre Kronor has been quietly perfecting Scandinavian comfort food since 1990, and it deserves a national holiday. If you leave here without loosening your belt and planning your next visit, you’ve done something terribly wrong.

So glad that you his local institution is still around and arriving up the same delicious goodness all these years. As always it was tough choice on which item to go with, but throw in the daily specials and it was almost too much. Thankfully the wife likes to share so that takes care of all least two options.

Cute atmosphere, friendly and attentive servers, and great tasting menu! Portion sizes are on the smaller size but have good flavor. We enjoyed the salmon quiche, the homemade hash, and the veal sausage links

A great spot for breakfast or lunch when on the north side of Chicago. Recommend the onion soup and Swedish Meatballs.

Lovely place and a long time staple of the neighborhood. So unique and comforting to come here, eat wonderful food and be surrounded by beauty. It feels like you’re in another country. This is a must stop for any Chicago visit!

I don’t normally leave bad reviews, but this was unacceptable. We waited almost an hour for our food, and when we ordered, the server actually criticized how much we ordered—which shouldn’t matter since we’re the ones paying. Out of coincidence, we happen to be Latino, and the guests who arrived after us, who were Caucasian, received far more attentive and friendly service. When our food finally came, it was less than half of what we ordered. At that point, we canceled the rest, and they acted surprised as to why. We still paid for what little we received, but the whole experience left a bad taste in our mouths. Won’t be coming back.

Excellent food and friendly service. Menu is a little small, but all very good options. When I came here, waitress also provided the current specials as well. Will definitely come back when in the area.

For the price of the meal was little disappointed. The potatoes were either undercooked or overcooked, the pastries were a little dry, but omelet was very delicious. The service was excellent.
