Went for happy hour. Waited an hour for fries to be told that our order was forgotten. Not my first time going but it feels like this place stays understaffed.
I came to Vol 39 with a group to have drinks before dinner. We had a great experience. The atmosphere is classy yet relaxed. It's good for a low pressure special occasion or catch up.
Gorgeous atmosphere! My wife doesn't drink alcohol, and she was extremely pleased with how accommodating the staff was. They made her a drink that still felt and looked sophisticated and layered. I liked my rum. They also gave us celebratory champagne (NA for my wife!). I will return to this beautiful destination.
Fun little cocktail nook

Absolutely loved this place. The atmosphere is chic and relaxed, with a subtle “old money private club” vibe that makes it feel both exclusive and welcoming. The food was simply outstanding—each dish better than the last. I started with the tuna tartare (fantastic), then had the Provençale tartine (even better), followed by Polish mushrooms that completely stole the show… until I got to the cheesecake. Hands down the best cheesecake I’ve ever had. Paired all of it with a beautiful bottle of South African Chenin Blanc. The service was flawless throughout. A truly memorable experience—Chicago is lucky to have a place like this.

If you're looking for a quiet spot to enjoy a quality drink, then I recommend this lounge. The atmosphere is calm which is perfect for solo visits or meetings with small parties. The service is attentive and the menu selection is impressive. This place has recently become one of my favorite places to visit in the loop.

I have to be honest that the quality and creativity of the cocktails has diminished a lot even in the past year.
Best cocktails we had in Chicago during our trip. We stayed at the Kimpton Gray which made it super convenient but I would 100% go even if you are not staying at that hotel. Great atmosphere too.

This was our second time here and we brought some friends. We had a great time and will be back again soon
Vol. 39 is a classy spot tucked inside the Kimpton Gray—think law books, leather chairs, and a vibe straight outta Mad Men. I had the Vol. 39 Old Fashioned and a Manhattan, both smooth and well-crafted. The bar cart service is a cool touch, and the small plates like bone marrow and caviar are solid, though a bit pricey. Dropped about $80 total. Great for a swanky night out, but not an everyday hang.

I should've taken pictures, I was there meeting a new acquaintance, and it was a pretty great spot. Comfortable, good service, and damned good drinks. I didn't try the food, but it looks like decent bar bite options, not a full dinner really. But the menu for drinks is pretty varied, the rye Manhattan was great, and the bourbon old fashioned was silky smooth. Easy spot to walk to in the loop, and near several transit options obviously.

Really glad we found this! We came for anniversary celebrations and will be back again multiple times this year. Thanks for looking after to us Lily!
Great, intimate and comfortable spot. Solid drinks. Our waitress was a little spazzy, but enjoyable experience overall.

The Manhattan served was less than half of the glass. We brought the it to the bartenders attention, and he just shrugged his shoulders. We live in the area, and We have been regulars at this place mainly because of one of the magnificent bartenders. He is not there anymore (unfortunately). I feel really sad that good places like this go downhill because of uncaring staff, who absolutely don’t have any pride in what they do. Very unfortunate..

I've been going to Vol.39 for 4 years now. The ambience is great and food used to be unique. This last experience was nothing like that. Food was stale and absolutely tasteless. Presentation was mediocre. Drinks still good, but that was it.
