The Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a significant archaeological landmark. The site features around 120 mounds built by the Mississippians between 800-1400 A.D., including the largest pre-Columbian establishment in North America, reaching 30 meters high with 600,000 cubic meters of earth. Visitors can explore the area, which offers information boards and is accessible near the road and interstate highway. While the museum and welcome center are currently closed, the site remains a unique and educational experience, providing a glimpse into the history of the first peoples in the region. Visitors can enjoy walking and working out on the mounds, especially in the early morning. The site can be easily reached by private car or Uber ride from St. Louis downtown, and the "Cahokia AR" app is highly recommended to enhance the experience. Although the museum is closed, the gift shop, bathrooms, and the Woodhenge site nearby are open and accessible. Overall, the Cahokia Mounds offer an impressive and fascinating glimpse into the ancient Mississippian culture.
