Everything was fine until a HUGE RAT ran across the dining room floor!

Food was absolutely horrible! I don't see how this place gets so many good reviews! Probably because they know the owners hahaha

Our first visit under the new owners and we unimpressed. The food was overcooked and dry. The service, while friendly, was slow, even though the restaurant was almost empty. We used to visit EPH often since it opened, but this visit was not very encouraging.

They have top tier fried pickles, great flavor and fry batter. Tried the SotD, black bean with feta-was awesome. Also had the grilled cheese and tots, tots were great!! We took a salad to go that also looked amazing

Food was awesome, waitress knew the menu and had great responses to our questions. Cheese curds were crunchy, burger was cooked perfectly, loaded steak sandwich was amazing. Also, get the Cajun tater tots.

It's fine for a local option. I've been here many times, never been let down, but never impressed either.

Stopped in because we were working in the area and it was the best decision I've made. Food is fantastic!!! I got the campfire burger and my buddy got the fish tacos. I could have eaten 4 of those burgers absolutely delicious. The fish tacos looked great and my buddy said they were great. Good atmosphere, good service, and amazing food. We will definitely be back.

The Reuben is good but they don't cut the corned beef correctly. It was very chewy. I'd go back again.

One of the only places in downtown Elgin open late. Excellent selection of drinks and bar food. Not too busy on a Friday night and we were able to have a meaningful conversation.

Family loved the prior menu, my absolute favorite fish sandwich! Came here to have it last weekend, wasn't aware of the new ownership change. Was surprised to be greeted with a rolled up piece of paper for a menu. Imagine my surprise when, NO FISH SANDWICH!

We ended up leaving since we didn't really see anytime we wanted. Subsequently, read reviews online, and seems like that was a good choice, to leave.

Very sad to see prior ownership leave, their food was really good!! Will miss them, along with everyone else.

Elgin Public House used to be a staple for my family. We ate there at least once a week because we could always count on dependable, high-quality food, a welcoming family atmosphere, and great service. It was even our go-to spot to bring out-of-town guests.

But all of that changed when the new owners took over at the beginning of the year. Instead of preserving what made EPH a true gem in Elgin, they gutted it. Gone is the menu full of excellent, reliable favorites — in its place, they dropped in the same lackluster selection from their other already disappointing restaurant. The food quality has nosedived. Meals that we used to look forward to quickly became meals we could barely tolerate. After two visits that literally left us feeling sick, we gave up on eating there entirely and only sat at the bar now and then.

To make matters worse, when I voiced my frustrations with the changes directly to the owners on Facebook, instead of addressing the feedback, they blocked me. That says everything about how little they care about this community or about maintaining the legacy of Elgin Public House.

What used to be one of the best restaurants in town is now a hollow shell — overpriced, poor quality, and run by owners who silence anyone pointing out the obvious decline. If you loved what EPH once was, save yourself the disappointment. This is not the same place, and it’s not worth your time or money.
