Sadly, the Herb's bakery name was destroyed by the current owners. If you expect anything from the previous owners avoid. They have not produced anything like the bakery prior. I hope they transition to what they do well which is a mexican style bakery after speaking to the work staff. I am all for change, but will miss their buttercream cakes.

I have been buying Birthday cakes from Herbs Bakery for 10 years now. They failed me this weekend. I ordered my daughter's 9th Birthday cake a week ago for this weekend. When I showed up to pick it up it was not made. I paid for the cake over the phone. I was told there is new owners and the baker did not come in and make my cake. No one called me to warn me. I had to rush and buy a jewel cake. I will not order from here again. They did not apologize.

We got simple cake but it tasted like pure sugar. We didn't find anyone in the family who liked it, even kids didn't eat it. Will not be coming back

I have been getting treats from Herb's Bakery for years...whether it's their bread or their cookies and cakes I am always so pleased with everything! today (for my birthday) I picked up a cake and cookies and cannolis and paczki (which was delicious - Laissez les bons temps rouler!) and got this wonderful dipped strawberry special for my birthday! can't sing their praises enough! all the best to the ladies working there today!

Well, this is a depressing review to write. They have completely changed since being sold. My husband grew up in Elgin and he was proud to introduce me to Herbs Bakery. It was beloved by his family. The previous owners loved their work and there was quality and pride in their products. There were once cakes and tortes displayed in all their glory of all sorts of varieties with fruit fillings and not overly frosted. Their buttercream was incredible! Their bread was fresh and their cookies and pastries were unrivaled. Imagine my disappointment when we came in from out of town and found this place to be a shell of its former self. Gone was the love and attention to detail. The donuts were dry and lacking in flavor, the cookies were so hard that my husband couldn’t eat them without dunking them in milk because they were so hard, and my slice of cake was simply not good. It tasted like store bought cake with store bought frosting. The buttercream was completely different . The experience was so disappointing. I wish we had looked at the reviews before we went in but we didn’t expect such a drastic difference. Rest in peace to the old Herbs. We won’t be back.

Updated 11/2023My heart sank after taking a bite of the "new" Herbs mouse ears doughnut. Gone was the delicate chocolate glaze, replaced by a thick, cloying coating. The familiar filling had vanished, leaving behind a bland cream that barely registered. Even the iconic "mouse ears" texture, once light and airy, felt like a dense hockey puck in my mouth. This review comes from a place of deep affection for Herbs. It was my childhood haven, where sugary treats whispered promises of summer days and family outings. Now, those echoes feel muted. I understand change is inevitable, but I sincerely hope the new owners will consider what made Herbs so special – not just the doughnuts, but the sense of joy and nostalgia they ignited.I'd love to see Herbs reclaim its place as a cherished community landmark. With a few tweaks and a touch of that old magic, it could once again become a haven for sweet memories, both old and new.Old review...If you haven't tried their Mouse ears Donuts you have no idea what you're missing.

I stopped in this morning - 9am on a Saturday - and was surprised to see that there was no bread at all, no rolls or buns. I was able to buy a box of the wonderful thumb cookies but there was very little else available. Hopefully this was a staffing issue, as the bakery won't last much longer with so little product to offer.

I have been going to Herbs since I moved to Elgin 10 years ago. Last year I noticed different people behind the counter. I noticed different items such as kolatczis. However, I recently bought some of those and the claws. I also bought the cake donuts. I was very, very disappointed with the quality. The filling was very dry, like it was sitting for days! I had to throw it out! The donuts tasted like instead of butter, it was more lard or shortening. The quality that use to be there is not there anymore! I looked at the cake designs on their web site and they look so cheesy! It was never like that before! I also noticed that the present owner, I'm assuming she is, is usually the only one behind the counter. If she really wants more customers and previous customers to come back, she needs to return to the quality of what it was before. I bet the the people who give it good reviews have not been to this bakery when the previous owners were there. They would immediately notice the difference! I will not be going there anymore. It is so sad to see what was such a great bakery for years go down like that. I wish the previous owners had found someone who were as good as they were! No stars! Adding only 1 because I'm required to add it!!!

**** Avoid this bakery! The bottom cake layer was covered in mold ***** I'm pregnant and I have had a craving for a vanilla cake with butter cream frosting for well over a week. I finally gave in and we found Herbs bakery on Google about 20 mins away. We called to see if they have any pre-made cakes and he told us they did. We got there and he pointed to the ones that were supposed to be vanilla. When we got it home, it was red velvet, which I was perfectly cool with, bc the butter cream (which what I'm craving) was vanilla. Well, when we cut into it, the bottom of thr cake was covered in mold. I didn't notice it at first until my husband stopped me and pointed out. Sure enough we smelled it, and it's definitely mold with a very pungent smell. We were both a little horrified. It literally smells like a wet, damp basement. Who know what would have happened if I ate this, being 6 months pregnant. Please beware of buy anything from this bakery. I have never had this experience before. The place looked pretty clean, inside and out. I'm just so shocked they're selling this. I wish I read the reviews before going. Apparently a few others have had the same experience.

Several weeks ago, I bought a bag of donut holes, and they were old and wet. Last time I bought a piece of cake, it was dry and had to be a couple of days old. Just this morning, I tried again. I bought a piece of red velvet cake. I went to eat a bite and there was mold on the bottom. What a shame! I am not sure what has happened to this bakery. I saw someone post that it was under new management.

Just not the same under the new management. I was a huge fan of the crème horns. I got one today and it was very shy on the filling. It was only half filled. Disappointed.

I emailed them over two weeks ago and they haven’t responded. Lack communication skills.
