We were first time customers to the bakery and asked about the type of frosting used inside of a cake on display. Was told “annoyingly” that the middle shelf is all chocolate cake. I asked again if the frosting was also chocolate and was assured that it was. It was not. And the cake was incredibly dry and flavorless. Also purchased a flourless cake that had an extra layer of cardboard on the bottom with frosting covering up the cardboard giving the appearance that it was a larger cake. Will never be back.

I used to love going here all the time. Recently quality has been going downhill, especially the macarons. I don’t know why, but something just tastes off. This week I bought an apple pie for Thanksgiving and there were apple seeds in my guests’ and I’s slices. I am BEYOND upset. This has never happened before. I miss Bennison’s when they used to be quality.

Was recommended to order cakes here by a friend, would be nice if I even got a response to my email. If you are unable to do a cake, it would save potential customers a lot of time to respond to them and tell them you aren't accepting inquiries.

Got a croissant from the farmers market. Second time this happens: I am given an old stale croissant and I realized an hour later when I wanted to have it with coffee. What is going on Bennison? Twice now this happens, first time I chalked it up to luck, but again? At this price point, this is disappointing.

The cakes are great but their service has become awful recently. The people at the counter are rude, don’t care much for the experience that they offer for their customers and it makes you want to grab whatever you need and get the hell out of the place.

The sign and vintage vibe are the best thing about Bennison’s. After years of going our consistent experience is that the donuts and most pastries are just so…below average. There are much better places in Evanston for the money. I want Bennison’s to succeed, and it has its following, but it seems to rely on sugar mostly to call things pastries. Unfortunately, I don’t think it’ll get better until new ownership is willing to try some new things.
