Former Employee Review (employed 10/23-11/23)
---
I worked at Hoosier Mama Pie Company and experienced a significant amount of racism and discrimination, particularly from the owner, Paula. Initially, I was supposed to work both BOH and FOH but Paula does not hire Black or Brown people to work at the front, which happens to get paid significantly more than the Back of House who works very hard and stressful shifts 10-12 hour shifts under constant harassment.
I was warned within the first week of what I was to experience but I never expected to be followed, to have things snatched out of my hands, to be made to do additional tasks that my coworkers were not doing, to be told to look her in the eyes when I’m talking to her, to be talked about openly in front of me to my coworkers, to be insulted constantly (it was a running joke between her and management that I was too sensitive and that I could not read [I was a writing fellow at Loyola University during my attendance and have multiple academic accolades]), to be fired after revealing I was neurodivergent. She not only harassed me and attempted to engage me in many power struggles but also instructed the managers to do the same in an attempt to force me to quit. She would often give contradictory instructions to what the managers taught me and stand over me to watch me. If I did something that wasn’t how she wanted, she took that as an opportunity to criticize, insult, and question my intelligence when I was only doing what I was trained and told to do by her management. When I spoke to her about the hostile environment the manager Olivia was creating by speaking to me like I was unintelligent and often insulting me, screaming at me and acting like I was a bother every time I had a question during my training period. Paula responded “You haven’t been here long enough to feel that way” and that’s when everything got worse. It was like me standing up for myself and asking for fair treatment was unacceptable. Paula often told me “You seem like you don’t want to work here” after. My last shift, she made me make hundreds of batches of products in preparation to fire me. The environment was toxic and hostile, making it a very difficult place to work. I also witnessed an incredible amount of harassment of my other coworkers. I advise anyone of color or marginalized backgrounds DO NOT WORK HERE. If you like a slice of white supremacy and discrimination as much as you like pie, this is the place for you.

I have attached the text that she fired me with as well as the email I sent her to clarify on the warning she gave me that “I was not progressing fast enough” a month into my employment, which she never replied to to clarify.

Things Better

This was our fallback the other day when the line at Walker brothers was way too long.
Really glad we didn't go to Walker brothers.
My wife ordered the bacon quiche, my son the bacon egg and cheese biscuit, daughter had a scone and I got yogurt with seasonal fruit granola and a side biscuit with butter and jelly. Everything was great home made, real food. The coffee is amazing, the staff super friendly prices are reasonable.

Excellent food and service in a welcoming seating area. Never had a bad experience in the numerous times we have patronized Dollop. Today I am happy to say they literally saved our Thanksgiving. Above and beyond what I thought they would do, again amazing people, amazing staff, amazing food.

I didn't know what to expect as I was recommended to go try the pie. I was not disappointed. The staff was friendly and the atmosphere is folksy. I'll be going back to try more of the pies.

Really tasty and the building itself is amazing!
Would really like it if they started providing lactose free milk. I would prefer it as a lactose-free option.

Every pie I've had here is insanely good, but the smores pie is without a doubt my favorite. The restaurant itself has a nice, homey feel to it. It's definitely not cheap, but sometimes you gotta pay for the good stuff.

whenever people visit me from out of town, i take them to Hoosier Mama. amazing quiches, wonderful ambience, and delicious coffees. every item on their menu is amazing, and they are very accommodating to nut allergies. sometimes if they think the slice they gave you is too small, they throw in a slice of something else! Hoosier Mama might be my favorite restaurant in all of Evanston

I stop by this morning for a sausage, egg and biscuit sandwich and the line was almost out the door. As usual, the food was great but service could be better.

Good food, but very pricey. Dining room was filthy ( tables had not been wiped), counter staff was very rude. They had no concept of service. I won’t be back.
