I live in Los Angeles, and I visit Chicago various times a year. Over the last 12 years, I have made a point to visit Hewn Bakery with family and friends during my visits. Despite the expensive price of their goods, I used to recommend the bakery to all my friends and family.
On my last visit on June 25th, 2025, I visited the bakery with a few friends at around 2 pm. Unfortunately, the service was terrible. While selecting my baked goods, a female employee with short hair and red lipstick who works at the bakery, served my coffee and without letting me know, placed it on the counter next to a customer who was coughing, breathing, and talking over my coffee. I waited some time, when I asked the woman employee where my coffee was, with an unpleasant disposition she responded “I called you and you did not respond, there is your coffee” pointing at the cup of coffee next to the customer who had been coughing and talking over my coffee for already sometime. Although I spent a considerable amount of money and tipped well, this female employee did not apologize and instead became defensive and demonstrated defiant behavior. I demanded a fresh cup of coffee and with an unpleasant disposition, my cup of coffee was replaced. I feel sad to say that despite the high prices of their goods, I have been a loyal customer for over 12 years. I will never go back to Hewn Bakery, nor my family, nor my friends. No customer should be treated so disrespectfully. Also, I just realized that in the last 12 years, I have never seen an employee of any other race but Caucasian, working at Hewn Bakery. Where is your diversity and inclusion Hewn Bakery? That further confirms my decision to eliminate their services.

Great croissants and breads. Quick service. They offer esspresso coffees, but no place to sit and enjoy your treats.

Hewn is the best bread store, not just in Evanston, but in all of Chicago. I've stopped by countless bakeries in Chicago, searching for one that truly fits my appetite and expectations. It was a tough journey to find a great bakery, and I initially visited Hewn with no expectations, simply because I was nearby.
I was shocked by how good all their bread was! I've tried it several times to evaluate the consistency of quality. Every single visit makes me like and trust this store even more. I recently visited Paris and tried many croissants, but Hewn's croissants are almost on par—there's not much difference. Since I'm very picky about food, especially bread, this place is legit.

Great coffee, greater bread. You can really taste the skill and expertise folded and baked into every loaf and pastry. The windows into the pastry kitchen are symbolic the transparency in this business. Support a local, woman owned business and that gives back daily! I highly recommend the Whole Wheat Seeded bread!

Employees are always super kind and helpful and the products are delicious! Everytime I’ve been in, Erica and Bethany in particular have helped me out multiple times. I can’t get enough, make my sandwiches out of Hewn bread everyday.

We love Hewn. It’s become a must stop shop on our grocery store run.
Having 1/2 a loaf in the freezer on the ready is the best!

I absolutely love Hewn. The workers are so friendly, the treats are DELICIOUS, and they always have prepaid orders ready for pickup by the promised time. The challah is particularly delicious, as are the scones and cinnamon buns. There is free street parking just around the corner. This place is an absolute staple in Evanston - I would recommend Hewn to anyone!

Hewn is excellent. We had the take and bake morning buns as part of our Christmas breakfast and they were incredible-flaky, buttery, perfectly sweet. They also have the best artisan bread around. So happy to have this so close to home. Would love if Libertyville location had larger menu and a spot to sit down.
