Came here on Friday with a reservation. Our server was overwhelmed and completely forgot how service works in a restaurant. All we got was an order taker and a food runner. We ordered about 12 items from each section of the menu and were very disappointed because store bought food at Mitsuwa is better. The man making sushi that day did not know how to make a handroll, all the ingredients fell out of the other end, rice was not seasoned and ingredients were underwhelming.
The other two people we had interactions with were a young female food runner who kept mouth breathing on everything she brought out and the hostess with long black hair, how was running around in panic the entire time we were there.

Sushi wasn't bad by any means but it wasn't really that good. Definitely some better options in the area but still good

I ordered delivery through the website since we are in range. It was a $4 delivery fee iirc. I enjoyed all the salmon rolls, and if I had a car I would go in person. For delivery, it was prompt and driver was nice. They also had some text updates.
Hope I can come in person next time. My sister and her partner enjoyed the food.

Good place for sushi and sashimi. I especially like their French maki. But their cooked items leave much to be desired. The yakitori (grilled chicken skewer with teriyaki sauce) was hard and dry. Their udon noodles have an odd, dense, doughy texture.
A basic food safety issue that Kuni's is surprisingly unaware of is not to pack hot foods in the same carryout bag as cold items, especially sushi and sashimi. On one occasion, my sashimi was warm and beginning to cook a little bit by the time I went home as they were packed in the same carryout bag as the hot items. They also shouldn't wrap hot steamed rice in plastic cling wrap. Not only is it a food safety issue, it's also unnecessary.

I used to come a lot until 8 years ago, then moved to another country. I am back again now and revisited recently. The quality of Sushi was better back in the day to be honest. Freshness, atmosphere and service were just normal.. I ordered Yudofu along with Ponzu, they charged me extra for it. Yudofu and Ponzu are like a combo, such as Sushi and Soy sauce. I do not understand why it is considered as an extra. Nigiris are just OK, same as you could eat at other restaurants. I would go again if I am in the area, but not expect the best food.

Kuni’s is a hidden gem and the best sushi in the area. Highly recommend the soft shell crab, tempura, and the kids can’t get enough of the miso soup. Will not disappoint!

casual sushi in Evanston. Kuni's has been a mainstay in this Main and Chicago business district.

Kuni's Japanese Restaurant is the place to go to all time whenever I'm craving for Sushi/Sashimi!!
Love their food, love their staffs, and love their atmosphere!!!
Some may think the place is out of trends, but to me, it always makes me feel like I'm at the sushi restaurant in Japan. I know this restaurant has been there since late 80s and ran by families and they are keeping same recipes as ever since then.
Always enjoying and always recommending this place!

Something is wrong with their food! I tried their beef teriyaki lunch special one day. The steak was not fresh and I threw up later that day. I didn’t realize it was the food problem until yesterday I tried another tempura lunch special. I got serious food poisoning again and couldn’t get off my bed.
I always enjoyed their perfect dinner menu and awesome service and atmosphere. But if you want to kill me—sorry, one star! This is so devastating and i will definitely not go there any more.

It is hard to find an authentic sushi restaurant in Evanston, but in this place everything is fantastic and alike my experience in Tokyo. Fried oyster is highly recommended, and the nigiri with a pleasing price shows the excellence of the chef.
