We had a killer dinner at shinsen tonight. The place was completely moved and I couldn't understand why. It was my first time here.
The food was just fantastic. It took a while because it was busy, but we were warned and waited patiently. I had the thin tamarind noodles. They came with some shrimp đŠ cooked in the shell. Which gives the dish the next level of aroma. Intensely flavorful and the right amount of spice.
Also had the black widow roll with soft shell crab. Spectacular presentation and texture.
Our server was super busy but very friendly and kind.
Looks like they have sidewalk cafe in the summer too.

Besides the veggie options I ordered the Karaage chicken. Crust was the only part that had any seasoning. Chicken itself wasnât dry but bland. Not a true Karaage dish as it had bones. True Karaage is flavorful and no bones. Mustard sauce was unappetizing as it was just another type of wasabi which here is just a rendition of a horseradish sauce. So your charging for Karaage and giving us fried chicken

2nd time for business meal here.
Thank you Ms. Poppy for great and thoughtful customer care.
Quality of Karaage is better than expectation. Good quality meat, good marinate for preparaton, chrispy thin deep fried koromo. Even better than what we can have in the most of places in Japan.

I love elephants, so I always wanted to try Shinsen. I stopped there on Saturday at 3:42 PM. A very friendly Asian person told me to choose any table outside. There were plenty of tables available. He recommended the $20 shrimp roll, but I was not convinced. The roll lacked flavor, and the shrimp was mushy. Although it was plenty for one meal, my total was $35, including a miso soup and the tip. I love the place and the service, but these shrimp rolls did not meet my expectations.

There are many restaurants featuring pleasant ambience, great service and excellent menu but all that together - plus zero âtable turnoverâ harassment AND patrons conversing in normal tone of voice?? Thatâs not easy to find but thatâs exactly what Shinsen does and why weâll keep coming back.

Best Creme Brulee ever. Sweet but not too far. Super smooth. Coming with the ice cream which is perfect match. Bring the smell of tea and cream at the same time.

5 stars! I just had an amazing experience at this Japanese restaurant. The new Asian twist on classic dishes blew me away. The flavors were recognizable but with a fresh spin. The presentation was stunning and the cooking technique was on point. And the wine selection? Impressive! One of the best I've seen in a small restaurant. Can't wait to go back and try more!

The best place to eat in Evanston. We always take our friends from out of town here and they are impressed. Some from LA saying this is the best sushi theyâve ever had! What to order: ALL of the black rice rolls (Black Widow, Black Dragon, Black Hornet) are absolute perfectionâ even someone who doesnât love sushi will be impressed. We love the creamy tom yum ramen and the fried rice (wagyu and shrimp are our favorites). All of the mocktails are also excellent. Weâve been coming here for over four years and the service is always extremely kind and attentive. Presentation is stunning.

Ramen is consistently great and good service for a solo diner. Would go back, when in the neighborhood.
What an incredible experience I had. Staffs and services are so kind and amazing. I have to stop here every time I am nearby Evanston. Japanese A5 Wagyu Fried Rice and the shrimp Pad Thai were ones of the best dishes Iâve ever had outside Thailand and in the U.S. Other dishes are so very delicious, fresh, and you can definitely tell they made it with care and great quality. Highly recommend for anyone. Thank you, Shinsen!
I had a really bad experience ordering through DoorDash. The merchant processed my order cancellation as a promotion instead of a refund, which resulted in me being overcharged by $30.
Very nice space, service was great (they gave some great suggestions) and the food is amazing! Looking forward to going back again.
