Best Mexican Cuisine and Service in Southern Illinois hands down. I’ve never had anything I didn’t thoroughly enjoy. The portions are an incredible value. The Mi Fajitas are phenomenal.
Excellent food, authentic, great service & atmosphere.

El Jalisco Johnston City is a hidden gem along the route. The service is great, with attentive staff who balance attention with respect for personal space. The food here was incredible, with standouts like the Carnitas, which are reportedly the best the reviewer has ever had. The menu offers traditional Tex-Mex dishes, including Fajita nachos and Chimichangas, served with familiar sides like beans and rice. The pollo Jalisco is highly recommended. The large menu features many great choices, and the portions are generous, often cheaper than similar dishes in Texas. The service is very friendly and surprisingly fast, even during busy times. The atmosphere was okay but appropriate for a Mexican restaurant. The margaritas are a highlight, with a good balance of flavors. The restaurant is wheelchair accessible since it is on ground level. Overall, El Jalisco provides a legitimate Tex-Mex experience in the Midwest, reminiscent of Texas-style cuisine, with great food, good prices, and a nice atmosphere.
