An absolutely glowing 5-star experience at Gray’s Mill!
If you’re anywhere near Montgomery, IL, this historic 1800s mill-turned-restaurant, speakeasy, and event venue is a must-visit. The moment you walk in, the place wraps you in its cozy, inviting charm—rustic, warm, and full of character.
The menu offers plenty of tempting choices, and everything we tried delivered. The chopped salad was fresh and flavorful, and the fish and chips were perfectly crisp and satisfying.
Service was outstanding, thanks especially to Adam. If you’re there on Wednesday, Friday, or Saturday, ask for him. He offered great recommendations, shared fascinating bits of the mill’s history, and even hunted down old photos and write-ups to bring the past to life. His attention to detail and genuine hospitality made the experience exceptional.
Though the restaurant is on the smaller side, it’s wonderfully cozy, with outdoor seating available when the weather is nice. They also host live music in the warmer months, Tuesday trivia, murder mystery nights, and Sunday brunches—plenty of reasons to keep coming back.
Gray’s Mill blends history, atmosphere, and top-notch service into a memorable visit. Already excited to return!

Food was ok. Mine was over cooked, but the other people in the party had great food. It was open mic on Thursday and it was a blast. Wait staff was excellent.

The owner Mike Baum has absolutely no clue what is going on at his bar/restaurant. His bartender Joe is rude and inattentive. People sit at the bar waiting to be served while he carries on conversations with others. There must be a reason why the addition has been going on for years with no progress in site.
Hats off to Ethan and Andrea who work at a place terribly mismanaged.

Had a great dinner experience this past Saturday evening and always a top notch experience. Our server, Isaiah was superb and very customer oriented. His follow up skills and eagerness to provide us with great service was a priority. He did just that! Food and view were great; did love mini dumpling appetizer. 2nd time here and we will be back. Thanks for a great experience. Cindy + Bill

Very cool old building with a lot of history. Beautiful outdoor patio/dining overlooking Fox River. The pretzel bites were good. My dinner companions all enjoyed their meals - they stuck with burgers/sandwiches. I ordered the weinerschnitzel. They have a placard advertising Schnitzel Sundays so I was expecting some amazing schnitzel. NOPE! It was disgusting. The mystery meat was drowned in a BBQ sauce with canned mushrooms and barely visable spatzel and burnt bits of who knows what. I don't think the cook/chef knows what schnitzel is. So very disappointing. It got loud as it was trivia night and we could no longer hear our conversations . Our server Ethan was awesome, funny and attentive. Another staff member gave us an impromptu tour of the facility. It's a far drive for me and my meal was so lackluster that I won't be back.

Brisket sandwich was sooooo dry. Double O burger was good as was the avacado chicken. One of the 4 of us didn't get their food and one of us didn't ever get their proper side until we were tired of waiting. It was the Friday fish fry special.. when we asked to see the manager we were told there wasn't one there and the bartender was the closest we would get. Our waiter was decent and flustered. The bartender was trying to make it right but it was too little too late.

Loved this place, I got a fat boy burger and a beer and it was delicious, the onions rings out of this world. Totally recommended and it is by the fox river, beautiful atmosphere !
Sat at a waterside table in the shade. It was a very pleasant experience. The basement barr/restaurant had a cool, old fashioned speakeasy vibe.
We had dinner here tonight. Everything was so delicious. Drinks were fantastic and Adam was fabulous! We will be back again soon!
Bugs everywhere and Alex was a very mean person to my group.
