Excellent alternative to Buttermilk. Buttermilk had a 30 minute wait list. As an alternate, we tried out It's a Southern Thing for brunch. We were pleasantly surprised. I had the Feliz chorizo skillet and my better half had a garden omelet with chorizo. Both were great dishes. The portion sizes were perfect. The potatoes were crispy. Try this place out!
Good food. Decor was ok. Will go back to try some other options on the menu. Not very busy for brunch on a weekday. Fried green tomatoes were very good.
This was our first time here and we loved it. We had the hush puppies which were delicious!!! I had the vegan bbq, my husband had the blackened chicken Mac and cheese, which was also very good. We had a side order of the garlicky green beans. Highly recommend this place. We will definitely revisit.
YUMMMM!!! Having lived in the South, I can tell you this place is delicious! So glad that there’s a Southern food place in Naperville. We came in about a year ago and thought this place was good but to our surprise, it was even better on this visit! Our server told us that they’ve recently updated their recipes for much of their menu and I am pleased with the changes.Everything we ordered was tasty and fresh. My favorite is still the biscuits with jam. They clearly mark everything that has pork on the menu and our server was so kind to make sure there was no cross contamination.
We were passing through and decided to stop here based on the brunch menu. Arrived at 10ish and were the only ones here. We sat outside as the weather was perfect. Our server was attentive without hovering around our table, offered great suggestions and kept our drinks full.We started with an order of fried green tomatoes (not pictured). They arrived minutes later hot and fresh atop a spread of pimento cheese, drizzled with garlic ranch and a side of bacon jam. Quite possibly the best fried green tomatoes we have ever had.Our brunch entrees included the Smothered and Covered, Smoked Wings Entree, Chicken Fried Steak and the Southern Thing Benedict (see photos). My Benedict was awesome. Big slices of pork loin on a toasted muffin, topped with garlicky spinach and perfectly poached eggs then covered in hollandaise. The wings had great flavor with a hint of heat and very tender. My son was ecstatic he could get wings for brunch. It's also woth noting the sausage gravy was super thick and had more flavor than probably any other sausage gravy I have had. Finally, the well seasoned hash browns were a perfect compliment to all the entrees. The other entrees were awesome and we all left stuffed and with to-go containers.I hope to come back in the future to try the dinner.
Mediocre food and terrible service. DO NOT RECOMMEND ?We ordered our skillet and eggs benedict, and waited and waited. Three other tables came and ordered after us, but they all got their food. After 35 minutes of waiting, we asked the staff when our food was going to come and they dismissed our comment with a cold “we’ll check on your order,” but never gave us an update. After full 45 min of waiting, we asked again and but the staff unapologetically said “your order is next. If you’re in that much of a rush, you just wanna take it to go? What do you want us to do?”We got our mediocre lunch almost an hour of waiting. Everything tasted bland.Instead of this rude attitude, I wish the staff just owned up to their mistake and apologized.I wonder if the food delay and rudeness was intentional. Maybe it was their subtle way of saying we weren’t welcomed in their restaurant? I wouldn’t recommend this place for any visitors because of the bland food and terrible service. I felt really disrespected and unwelcomed.
First time visit to enjoy Southern Food in Naperville. It was a Thursday night and my daughter and I got together for dinner. She had ordered take out from here and said the food was very good. It’s a small place and wasn’t very crowded. We asked to be seated outside and it was a great night to do so. The menu looked great and it was hard to decide what to order. Our server made a few suggestions and we ordered frisée green tomatoes as an appetizer. My daughter ordered the shrimp and grits and I ordered the catfish. The tomatoes were nice and crisp, not oily at all. The remoulade sauce was delicious. The shrimp and grits order was huge, a nice blend of shrimp, sausage and grits and the sauce was nice and spicy but not overwhelming. My catfish was fantastic. Nice and crispy and great flavor. The fries were just okay, the pickled onions and cucumber salad was delicious. I definitely be back!
Drinks were delicious. Food was ok. Who gets a pile of pulled pork on a plate? They don't have buns for a sandwich. We asked. Food came out a few at a time. Kids waited for their food while adults were already eating. Hush puppies were burnt to hell. Probably won't be back
Catered from it's a Southern Thing and the staff was AMAZING. They did an amazing job helping pick a menu, set up, help during lunch and cleanup. We had delicious wings, hush puppies, mac and cheese, pulled pork sandwiches, turkey sandwiches and amazing banana pudding and key lime custard. Everyone loved the food and I highly recommend reaching out for your event. The event went so smoothly because of their team - a job well done!
Since I walked in I was greeted right away. The bar tender/waiter was super nice. The food… delicious I had to order some sides to go for my left over wings. The dessert… ?.
Restaurantji Recommends
The food here was expensive and a disappointment greasy, oily, and flavorless. The service took a half hour for drink, and another 45 for the food there was probably about 5 tables there when we went. Apparently a pound of wings is only six. I also got the smoked pulled pork I highly doubt that pork has ever seen a smoker, the chicken was dry. I'd recommend only coming here for there beer selection but it will take them 20 minutes to get you it then 20 more to get you a refill.
Fabulous dinner. We will be back!!!! Cocktails were yummy! Great service, even on a busy Saturday night. Fried pickles and crab dip appetizers are a must have. Meatloaf and shrimp and grits are tasty and perfectly prepared.
Really good. Classic southern fare (obviously) but done right. Biscuits were fresh, gravy was full of bite and flavor. Too often white gravies are bland and over-floured... Not here. Big chunks of sausage and seasoned well. The fact that this place was quiet during Saturday brunch while Buttermilk across the lot had a 2-hour wait is criminal. I've been to both and this was better. Highly recommend!
Came for a late breakfast. This place is a hidden gem. Had the chicken fried steak and the biscuits & gravy.Absolutely out of this world good.Potatoes were crispy pillows of goodness. Scrambled eggs were perfect. Sausage gravy was spicy like it should be.We are coming back for sure!
Food was decent, I asked to fry the hash browns (country potatoes) hard and they were. Perfectly. Chicken sandwich was good, better once I put some hot sauce on it. The fried tomatoes was alright *eye roll* but the mimosa with pineapple juice was superb and should be a consideration if you plan on drinking a mimosa with your meal. Martin behind the bar is awesome. I sat at the bar, but it wasn't difficult to get a table. Overall, decent spot, chill atmosphere, good food, service was attentive and drinks were good.
