Was better before the owner sold it to a chain. Employees are ok but less friendly, restrooms aren't kept as nice, menu selections from barnellies have all but completely disappeared. Food from portillos section was close to as original. Still worth visiting occasionally.
Ok I may be a little biased because my maiden name is Portillo! However, as a tourist how could I leave without trying an authentic Chicago dog? Their buns are so soft and flavorful, their dogs have a bite to them and their toppings go perfectly well! I also loved their fries and cheese sauce. It’s dangerously good! A must try!

That said, when you need a really good cheeseburger with everything for less than $8, visiting Portillo's is still a good idea. Their $8 cheese char burgers definitely rival restaurants that charge anywhere from $12 to $18 for the same burger.
