Sugar Mama Bakery (Downtown Bloomington)

I ordered Sugar Mama Cupcakes and Sugar Cookies - both gluten free - for my baby shower, and they were PHENOMENAL. The cupcakes were moist and delicious, and the cookies are the best sugar cookies I have ever had with the cutest designs. Massive thank you to Sugar Mama!

I ordered 240 mini cupcakes from Sugar Mama for my wedding ($609.32 total), but they were never delivered. Despite multiple attempts to contact the owner the day of (Sunday), I didn’t hear back until 4 hours later when she said she had been in a car accident.

I absolutely get it; things happen. What matters most is that she was safe. I would never fault a business owner for an emergency or bad luck.

While I empathize with emergencies, the situation was handled poorly. There was no backup plan and no timely communication.
She promised a refund, but was unable to refund the money directly to the card on file, saying she would mail a check a few days later. We asked for a quicker resolution and offered to pick it up in person.

When we picked up the check, it was short by $9.32, and no apology or gesture was offered in person.

At bare minimum, I would have expected a check for the full amount. If we had received that, I would not have written this review.

Ideally, we would have also been met by the owner (who I’m fairly certain was in the back, based on interactions in the bakery). If that wasn’t possible, a note of thanks or apology would have been a nice substitute.

If it were me, I would have been there in person, provided the whole check, and sent the person off with some cupcakes or something as a gesture of good will.

Sugar Mama makes great cupcakes, but the lack of professionalism and follow-through during such an important event was deeply disappointing. I wouldn’t recommend them for events.

Go with a more reliable local vendor like Pollen & Pastry or The Flower Café. (Heck, even Hy-Vee—who came through with cupcakes for $500 less when we had to run there when Sugar Mama didn’t deliver. Huge props to them.).

Came in around 2 the other day and cupcakes were already picked over for the day but they're still delicious. Just decadent and wonderful.

First off…the cake was everything I wanted and more. Susie went above and beyond the cake order and surpassed all expectations. Do not pass this bakery up! It is a MUST TRY🙂

Best birthday cake ever! My go to bakery

The best bakery in Bloomington, in my opinion. The cinnamon rolls and Big Mamas are delicious. They have vegan and gluten-free options, too.

We used Sugar Mama Bakery for our wedding cake and were beyond pleased with how well it turned out! They crafted a perfect, 3-tiered cake that was exactly what we wanted! We also ordered a vanilla and buttercream sheet cake to have enough cake for our guests and everything tasted delicious! Thank you, Sugar Mama Bakery, for being the icing on top of our perfect day!

Lost my business after they started getting restrictive on the types of mini pies you could select for Thanksgiving. Used to be a yearly tradition. Happy to support local businesses of course. But once you start treating the customer like just a number is where you lose your touch. You are no different than the corporate places that make billions, so that’s where my money will go from now on.

I live in champaign and make the drive over just to get cupcakes several times a year. The staff is always friendly and the food is great. They are a little expensive but you definitely get what you pay for.

Parking: You may have to walk a block or two but it's a nice neighborhood with a lot of great local businesses.

I tried to order a coffee with dairy free milk and was refused because “the drink will not froth properly with dairy free milk and we only make authentic coffees”. I reluctantly still order and was given the wrong drink.
If you need any accommodations I’d go down the street to the other coffee shop, coffee hound.
