This was my first time dining inside Steak ’n Shake in years, we typically do drive through and unfortunately it was a terrible experience.
I didn’t realize the restaurant is now self-ordering, which wasn’t an issue. The problem started with the self-serve soda system. When I went to get drinks, they were out of cups and an employee had to refill them—she was clearly unhappy about it. When I asked how the soda system worked, I was told I needed to scan my receipt. We did not know and my husband had already thrown it away. Instead of offering a solution (such as reprinting the receipt), the employee said there was “nothing she could do” and showed a lot of attitude—even though we had paid for drinks.
I asked to speak with a manager. The employee briefly disappeared, then returned saying the manager told her to fill the drinks behind the counter. No apology, no explanation, and no effort to prevent the issue from happening again.
The food was also disappointing. My daughter wouldn’t eat her grilled cheese because it tasted bad, and she normally loves grilled cheese. My husband swapped meals with her and couldn’t finish it either because it was so unpleasant. The other meals were fine.
Since leaving, my husband’s stomach has been upset and he’s spent a lot of time in the bathroom.

The restaurant itself was clean, and I really wanted to leave a positive review—but between the poor customer service and questionable food quality, we won’t be returning.

I recommend training on customer service. You could also avoid confusion by eliminating scanning tickets for beverages and have staff hand your cups with your meals.
We were not the only people there to have an issue with the soda machine.

Me and my family went in at 12:31 and did not get our food until after 1:30 and when we went to ask what was taking so long, the employee yelled at my mother.

Beef tallow fries suck,, and not enough salt, which probably would’ve helped. Has steak ‘n Shake ever heard of the cholesterol problem?

Business went down after the pandemic. I believe the kiosks really hurt the Business in the long run. The customer service is completely gone but the food is still good. The restaurant is always fairly clean and the food is fairly quick and fresh. Will continue to come here but I know alot of people who quit coming here due to orders being taken on the kiosks only.

Great food, I’m not a fan of electronic ordering machines. If I go in person I want to deal with a person. The staff was kind and helpful but bring back real waiters.

Had to scan my receipt to fill my soda from fountain. I understand why places do this but they'll always lose a star for it, I doubt the loss from people stealing fountain drink from time to time is that great so this just seems petty. I think my fries were old too, only thing that saved them was the fry seasoning packet.
