We visited Lucha Canting for the first time tonight. It was excellent! I just moved back here after living in Austin, TX, for many years. I wasn't expecting the food and atmosphere to be as good and inviting as they were. I told my dinner companion the food was as tasty as any Mexican food I've had in TX, and it was beautifully presented. The way in which the restaurant was decorated made me feel like I was back in Texas! Lastly, our server was excellent. He checked on us just the right amount, and got our food out in good time. All in all, it was quite a pleasant experience!

This is our families go-to for gluten free dinner. We have a family member that is celiac, and have asked lots of questions and feel comfortable with their level of care. Great food, great service, nice place for dinner!

Update 9/23/24: They have a new menu, only slight changes, they still have all of our favorites and added a couple new upgraded sides. The soup is great (I don't remember if it's GF...)

Lucha Cantina in Rockford, IL, offers a lively and vibrant atmosphere with its eclectic decor featuring bright, colorful, murals and sugar skull statues. The restaurant has a fun vibe, with options for private parties and an inviting outdoor dining area. Tequila lovers will appreciate the extensive selection, including some limited-edition options you can purchase and enjoy at home.

The food experience is a mixed bag. The menu thoughtfully includes gluten-sensitive options, which is a plus. We tried three appetizers: the yucca tater tots, ribeye steak tacos, and a bowl of chips with pineapple salsa, habanero salsa, and house-made guacamole.

The yucca tater tots were a standout, crispy on the outside and warm with a well-seasoned interior, complemented perfectly by the smoky, spicy chipotle mayo. The pineapple salsa was a delightful blend of spice and sweetness, while the habanero salsa offered a rich, smoky flavor with cumin and garlic. (Personally, I like when the vegetables in salsas are chopped smaller, and less watery).

However, the ribeye steak tacos were disappointing. They came warm but not freshly cooked, leading to a dry, less tender steak, and the rice was similarly dry. The guacamole was smooth and creamy, though it leaned heavily on cumin and garlic, which may not suit everyone’s taste.

On the drink front, the Southside Adjacent cocktail, made with gin alternative, fresh lime, mint, and soda water, was refreshingly excellent.

I’d consider returning if the steak in the tacos were prepared fajita-style and served hot. The pickled jalapenos could use more pickling for a better punch. Overall, Lucha Cantina is fun and has potential, but there’s room for improvement in the food.

Vegetarian options: They did have several vegetarian appetizers and salads to choose from.

Dietary restrictions: If you're gluten sensitive you can safely dine here.

Parking: Plenty of free parking.

Kid-friendliness: Separate kid friendly menu

Wheelchair accessibility: Wheelchair accessible bathrooms and seating.

Visiting Rockford and found this amazing gem, Lucha Cantina. Located on the second floor, this fabulous spot has a bar, dining room, patio and event room. The food is absolutely delicious with the most awesome staff.

A huge plus is there are gluten free options and they can substitute any cheese with vegan cheese. Just ask your server.

This is a must, so check it out!
