I stopped by to get a little bite to go, and the hostess, Angie, was amazing. Such a cool atmosphere, great food, and excellent service. Thanks so much, Angie!

If you do not enjoy seasoning and flavor, you may enjoy the food at Rathskeller. I came in on a Monday evening and asked the hostess if the bar or dining area would be easier, she suggested the bar. Our server/bartender looked like he walked in from another sports dive bar. The food was very slow coming out and at no point did the server ask how anything was. We ordered brat and kraut balls which were passable, just fine. My entree was schnitzel, potato pancake, and spaetzl noodles. NOTHING was seasoned or flavored whatsoever, and the schnitzel was dry and chewed. I would've been upset if I paid $15 for this, but at $30 for the plate, it's just insane. Atmosphere is cool, beer list is extensive, but that doesn't do much for me if the food is public school cafeteria quality.

I enjoyed a late lunch here one day, and I found it to be quite nice. The historic building makes for a nice, traditional German atmosphere. The staff was friendly, and I was able to sit down in the bar area right away. I got the sauerbraten, a dish I hadnāt tried before, and I found the food to be delicious. The slightly sour sauce was novel to me, but it was tasty with the beef. It made for a very hearty lunch. German restaurants arenāt common where Iām from, so this made for a fun meal. You canāt go wrong with this restaurant if youāre looking for a good meal.

I love the interior design. Great atmosphere. Definitely try the pretzel with mustard.

We just stoped in for a drink and appetizer before a show.
Absolutely love the atmosphere and the service is great. I had one of the best Manhattans. Be aware that the horseradish mustard will make your hair grow...dip lightly. It's a perfect place for dinner before heading to the Old National Center (just around the corner). Fine German food!

The atmosphere was great but that's it. The service was terrible. We sat for 20 minutes and finally decided to just get our drinks from the bar. The bartender told us he would bring it to our table. Another 15 minutes later, he brought the drinks except for one. We ended up never getting the last beer which left me without anything to drink. Eventually, another server came by and we got to order my drink and our food. My drink never arrived. We shared the cold platter and then all 4 of us got Bratwurst. This truly was the worst food I've ever had. I get that asking for authentic German food is too much but it just wasn't good. The Bratwurst was neither gebraten (fried) or warmed up. It was literally a cold Bratwurst in a stale hard hotdog bun. The fries were cold and almost raw potato wedges. When we told the server about it, he just said that the chef just doesn't know what he's doing. We asked if we could get at least warm food and he just shrugged his shoulders. We definitely won't be back and really don't understand why it has so many positive reviews.

The food is phenomenal! Stuffed mushrooms were the first thing I ate and they were so good. Our waitress was funny and really cool. The atmosphere was warm, fun German music playing in the backgrounds and but not loudly. Decor was spot on.

The Rathskeller is one of our favorite places, best German food in Indy! Our server Kristen was great! Very friendly and gave us the appropriate time for our meal. The food was delicious, portions were plenty. We always recommend the Rathskeller for anyone looking to experience quality German food and atmosphere!
Rathskeller has an older feel to itādated, but still charming in some ways. The ambiance is actually pretty nice and cozy, especially if youāre going for a relaxed evening.
Unfortunately, the food was a big letdown. I ordered the pesto pasta and couldnāt even finish a quarter of the plateāit was that bad. My husband ordered the rouladen, which was a bit dry, but at least it was still edible compared to the pasta.
The bathrooms could really use a makeover, which added to the overall dated impression. On a positive note, they do have a good selection of beers, which might be the highlight of the visit.
āļø Overall: Nice ambiance and solid beer selection, but the food quality didnāt match the atmosphere. With some updates and better execution in the kitchen, this place could be much better.

I love this place. It is one of my favorite spots in Indy and is always the first place I bring people when they visit Indy for the first time. Dinner last night was excellent (as always) and I found that it is even conducive to eating out on a diet (which I have not had to contend with here before). I had the grilled lemon pepper chicken and it rose to occasion!
Love the Rathskellerā but there are 2 great bars with no bar stools? Would love to see this change.
Also, would love to see them offer a premium (veal) schnitzel. The Rathskellerās pork schnitzel is a bit tough/thick for my liking, and underwhelming (itās like the patty from a large breaded tenderloin sandwich). I say this having had very good schnitzel in Europe on more than one occasion
