This small place off calumet, or old 49, depending on how you remember Valpo, is a gem. It’s really small, so make reservations. The size also means it gets a little loud when it fills up, which it will. The menu is limited, changes weekly, and is delicious. I had a tasty salad and my wife kicked off with a soup she really liked (I can’t remember what she had). Then the main course came. I should point out that they have a butcher shop where you can Wagyu steak by the ounce, but it was $24 an ounce. Unless I could actually speak to the Wagyu cow and discuss Japanese Bovine American relations, it was just too steep for that evening. I did get the non-Wagyu filet, and it was cooked to perfection. The potatoes were good too. My bride got the Mahi Mahi, not usually a fish person, and she loved it. We will be going back. I should mention that the service was great. There is Joi Di Vie amongst the staff and it makes The Bait Shop a fun place to go.

A remarkable dining experience in a small hidden gem of a restaurant. The menu changes nearly daily and includes fresh choices of meat, seafood and more. The service was outstanding. Mariah makes an excellent Old Fashioned among other craft cocktails. The dinners were delicious. It is difficult to recommend anything specific since everything was good. Save room for dessert!

Great atmosphere and excellent service. Unique and creative menu. Chicken and waffles, and seafood pasta were really good.One of my absolute favorite restaurants in Valpo. Never disappointed.My In laws had the Creme Brulee and said it's the best they've ever had, anywhere.

Went there for the first time last night and loved it! The drinks and food were amazing and service was incredible. It is very quaint which gave it an intimate and cozy atmosphere. I had the mahi and my husband had ribeye and both were perfect! Also large portions which made it even better! I highly recommend The Bait Shop and we will be visiting again in the future!

I recommended this place to a couple colleagues from out of state. I went there once and enjoyed the food. My colleagues went to inquire about making a reservation and were responded with what I would say is arguably the most immature and unprofessional response. I will not be recommending anyone to this place. Hopefully this will be a learning lesson from the owner on how to be more mature moving forward. It seems the other negative reviews are also a reflection of the service and unprofessionalism. Seems to be a pattern of behavior.

I can’t say much about the food or the atmosphere. This is regarding their service and level of professionalism. Made inquiries on another platform re: Thanksgiving reservations and was retaliated against with verbal abuse by a FB Admin. I think I’ll keep my money right in my pocket. Thank you!

Very small menu, excellent recommendations, fantastic trout appetizer and cheesecake dessert. Salmon and steak was great. Probably not going to wow someone who loves picking over a menu of 37 different entrees, but for our party of 4 who just wanted good food and even better company, it was perfect.

We've had multiple dishes done perfectly and he changes the menu often (I appreciate that and understand how difficult it is to be operating with new ingredients from our own experience) Great job team we love our date nights

If you are a foodie and love a chef's exploration of taste and scent this is the place to go in Valpo. I truly compare their flavors to Stephanie Izard and the Girl & The Goat in Chicago. The cocktails are also worthy of accolades, and the staff are beautiful! Kudos to everyone.
